This is our second exciting piece of news!
English Heritage has just published a new digital guide to Chester Castle on the Bloomberg Connects arts & culture app, which you can download FOR FREE onto your phone here https://www.bloombergconnects.org/ and then use as your very own audio guide on site. The audio tour features Gary Ashby, our Volunteer and Community Engagement Manager for the property, and a highlight is his account of the castle's ghosts.
It's the latest of over 50 digital site guides English Heritage has published on the app, and will soon be followed by a guide to Chester's Roman amphitheatre, so watch (and listen) to this space!

And remember you can download this totally for free. 😊

So when you visit the Castle, you have your own personal tool which you can listen to on your phone as you walk round it doesn’t of course getting all the extra stories and historical detail from one of our volunteers and of course there are plenty of ghost stories..

Bloomberg Connects is a free mobile app featuring guides to thousands of museums, galleries, sculpture parks, gardens, and cultural spaces in one easy to use app.

This Saturday sees the first Chester Castle history symposium which we posted about earlier on this week.

It also sees the fitting and installation of our new interpretation boards in the guard room and around the site , hence why we are closed this weekend.

We are though, super excited to announce two major interpretation uplifts and understanding for the site to visitors .

The first piece we would like to introduce to is the longer awaited reconstruction of the chapel within Agricola Tower and the Chapel of Saint Mary de Castro.
Using cutting Edge technology and painstaking research and analysis of the walls and ceilings, and some what can be only described as stunning artistic reconstruction of the fresco based on the available evidence, you can now look and explore the chapel as it would’ve looked in the mid 13th century..

We are so utterly proud of this, we hope you will be as well. Please do click on the link and take a look and enjoy a fuller and more detailed exploration of an incredibly nationally important Medieval chapel.

The walls of the medieval chapel in the Agricola Tower at Chester Castle were richly painted around 1240 with scenes including miracles of the Virgin Mary and St Edward the Confessor. From the fragments of painting that survive, we’ve been able to reconstruct how the chapel may once have looked, E...

This week is seeing a very busy time at the Castle with EH members week and for our costume interpretation volunteers in particular.
Our first ever expansion into the fourth century late Roman period, took place at the amphitheatre as part of the programme.
The weather was, shall we say slightly hot for Britannia but that didn’t deter lively engagement with many visitors and tourists.

The castle will be open this weekend and we will be returning to the amphitheatre again on Saturday as well, in support of the Viking Discover day!
