💥 YES… WE’RE BACK! 💥

Our annual Soldiers & Citizens (IV) event is back this month! 🎉

📅 Saturday 19 & Sunday 20 September
⏰ 10:00am–3:00pm
🎟️ AND IT’S TOTALLY FREE!!

Get ready for our usual fantastic mix of living history, costumed interpretation and hands-on experiences, bringing the incredible 900+ year history of Chester Castle to life!

Come along and meet our brilliant interpreters, discover the stories behind the castle, get hands-on with the past and explore our new interpretation boards and information around the site.

There’ll be plenty to see, do and get involved with — and we’ll be revealing more details about what to expect over the coming days, so keep your eyes peeled! 👀

We’re delighted to say that October will see the return of our now-famous Ghost Tours of the Castle! We’ll be sharing more details — including the latest happenings — very soon.

A new dig at the site of the first confirmed Roman villa discovered in North Wales will aim to answer key questions about the area’s ancient past.

The University of Chester has teamed up with DigVentures for the archaeological dig in Rossett, near Wrexham, following a successful crowdfunding campaign. The excavation follows investigations into the area by the University and Archaeological Survey West, sparked by the discovery of a lead ingot by a metal detectorist near Wrexham in 2019. Further archaeological exploration of the wider area revealed Roman flooring, ceramics and other Roman artefacts that hinted a high-status Roman building could be nearby.

The site has since been confirmed as a villa complex, and its discovery is helping to reshape archaeologists’ understanding of Roman rural life in the region, raising the possibility that Roman wealth, villas and settlement extended further into Wales than previously thought.

Who watched the Morris dancing at the Amphitheatre today?
Did you know? It is a type of English folk dancing which can be traced as far into history as 1448!
During the 17th century, there was a Puritan backlash against traditional festivities that were deemed 'idle' or 'Pagan'. Morris dancing was banned in parts of the country! 😱
Luckily the craft survived, as you witnessed today, mainly in rural villages, deeply linked with seasonal events like May Day, Whitsun Ales, and plough plays! 🥰
