Is it just a good ghost story... or is something really there? 👀
Join us after dark in our second ghostly event, this time for an evening of conversation, ghost stories, and the real backstory behind the last FIVE years of strange incidents at Chester Castle 🏰
Join our castle staff and investigators as we lift the lid on how paranormal investigation actually works.
From old-school storytelling to the more formal side of ghost hunting — proper research, evidence, equipment, and method — just how DO you hunt for ghosts properly? And do they exist at all? 👻🔍
We'll look at the very different ways investigations are carried out, share the latest findings from recent hotspots, and separate the spooky tales from the serious work.
The evening will conclude with a walk-around mini investigation of some of the castle's most active hotspots, using real investigation equipment to see if we can detect any ghostly activity ourselves 🕯️📡

Join our staff and volunteers as we take you round the most haunted corners of the castle and share the stories of spectral forms dating from the castle's dark and turbulent 900 year history.....and be updated on the more recent paranormal happenings at the site that have even left our team questioning what they saw. 👀

🏰 SOLDIERS & CITIZENS — WHAT A WEEKEND! 🏰

What an incredible weekend at Chester Castle, celebrating 900 years of history — and what a response from our visitors!

A staggering 1,100+ people joined us over the two days to experience our Soldiers & Citizens event, with living history interpretations spanning from the 13th century right through to the 1940s.

Visitors discovered the fascinating story of Chester Castle’s military garrison, but also the civilian side of the story — exploring how the people of Chester lived alongside the military presence at the Castle and how it shaped life in the city across the centuries.

⭐ But without doubt, the stars of the weekend were our magnificent war horses, Rocket and Peter! 🐎🐎

Representing the heavy cavalry of the English Civil War, they captivated crowds with their presence, skill and the incredible horsemanship of their riders. They certainly proved to be firm favourites with visitors, volunteers and staff alike!

The weekend was also an important opportunity for us, as a free-to-enter English Heritage site, to raise much-needed funds towards the ongoing care and upkeep of this remarkable historic place.

From all the staff and volunteers at Chester Castle, a huge and heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who came along, supported us, donated, talked to our interpreters and shared such fantastic feedback. We’ve already heard plenty of requests for more events like this — and we’ll certainly do our very best!

🏰 But that’s not all…

Chester Castle remains open throughout the season, every weekend, and we’ll be announcing our Christmas event very soon.

And before that, our ever-popular Halloween Ghost Tours return — with an especially spooky programme this year, including special ghost evenings, conversation and discussion about the Castle’s supernatural stories, strange happenings and some of the eerie tales associated with this ancient site. 👻

🐎 What a first day at Soldiers & Citizens yesterday! 🏰

The war horses did us proud, our interpreters have brought Chester Castle’s 900-year story to life, and the Garrison has been out in force!

Come and meet our soldiers, civilians and living-history characters, discover the stories of the Garrison of Chester Castle across 900 years, and see our magnificent war horses in action. ⚔️🐴

🐎 THE CAVALRY HAVE ARRIVED! 🐎

Our regular favourite war horse Rocket has been joined by his new chum Peter, and both are now safely quartered at the Castle, with plenty of water, forage and a little well-earned rest!

⭐ Loved by volunteers, staff and visitors alike, these magnificent horses are always a firm favourite — so come along this weekend and say hello to Rocket and Peter!

Then watch them take to the field with their cavalry trooper riders from the English Civil War, bringing the sights, sounds and spirit of 1645 back to life.

⚔️ Discover what cavalry activity around Chester Castle might have looked like during the Great Siege of Chester and the Battle of Rowton Moor — complete with horses, riders and plenty of action!

Don’t forget it’s our soldiers and citizens event this coming weekend! Our usual mix of military and civilian living history celebrating 900 years of the Castle. We are very excited to announce the horses will be back as well!! So your favourite war horses will be in attendance🙂

Gate open at 10am on Saturday and Sunday morning with displays in the lower green off the city walls and in the courtyard throughout the day .
