An Essex council leader walked into an asylum accommodation site expecting one thing and came out describing what he saw as “more akin to a holiday camp”. 😳

Essex County Council leader Peter Harris said he was “aghast” by what he saw during a tour of RAF Wethersfield, which is being used to house asylum seekers.

Speaking on GB News, Harris described full-sized football pitches, fully equipped gyms, fitness rooms and an indoor sports hall where residents play cricket and basketball.

He also said martial arts instructors were brought in, and that one resident was a UFC fighter who was training at the site.

Harris described the facilities as “fantastic”, adding that they were facilities “many sports clubs would love to have right the way through the country”.

The council leader also spoke about the dining facilities, saying there was a choice of menus and “fantastic fresh food”.

He said the accommodation included rooms with two or three beds, while newer units being built as part of an expansion were “brand spanking new”.

Harris was told around 800 migrants were living at the site, although he said he only saw around 150 during his visit. He was reportedly told many of the others were still in their rooms because they like to get up later, while others had been taken into town by bus.

He also described a medical centre staffed by GPs and nurses, which asylum seekers could access at any time.

Harris said he arrived at 9.30am but was not allowed into the facility until 10am, when many residents were still in bed.

We oppose the proposed conversion of the former Boughton pub, Spital Vaults, into a nine-bedroom House in Multiple Occupation (HMO).

We recognise the building needs a viable future, but local residents deserve more than broad assurances about "professionally managed" accommodation.

The proposal would create a large shared-household property in a residential area. While it is being promoted as accommodation for homeless people and working professionals, we are concerned it could eventually be used for Home Office asylum accommodation as the Government moves people out of asylum hotels and into alternative housing.

Before any planning permission is granted, the Council must secure clear, enforceable answers:

-Who will live there?
-Could it ever be used for asylum accommodation?
-What protections will be in place for neighbours and local services?
-How will parking, waste, antisocial behaviour and management be handled?
-Why is a nine-bedroom HMO the best future for this site?

Residents should not be presented with a fait accompli. We believe planning decisions must put existing communities first, with transparency, meaningful consultation and binding conditions, not vague promises.

If you share our concerns, please make your voice heard. Contact your local councillors, submit your views to the Council's planning process, and help ensure local residents are properly listened to before any decision is made.

Planning Reference: 26/02225/FUL
Date: 16 July 26
Proposal: Conversion of existing dwelling into a 7 bed HMO
Address: Spital Vaults Public House, 1 Spital Walk, Chester, CH3 5DB

Consultation Expiry Date: 6th Sept 26.

The guide correctly states that the legal age of consent in the UK is 16. However, it fails to explain that while relationships involving 16 and 17 year olds may be legal, most adults in their early to mid-20s and older would consider pursuing someone that age socially and morally unacceptable.

Anyone under 18 is still legally a child. Simply stating "16" without wider context risks creating the wrong impression for people unfamiliar with UK social norms.

The guidance in the poster would be stronger if it also made clear that sexual activity involving anyone under 16 is illegal, and that serious offences such as child sexual abuse or r**e WILL result in deportation.

Angela Rayner has softened the rules around traveller sites, making it more difficult to stop the use of illegal sites. This is a specific issue in our own constituency with recent issues in the Saughall and Warrington ward.

According to the Daily Telegraph, ‘there has been a 73 per cent rise in the number of unauthorised traveller caravans across England since January 2020, up from 2,860 to 4,950.’

We stand with the Conservatives in fighting this problem. Proper provision, certainly but not unauthorised sites!

Every citizen is already taking their share of this burden through taxation, through increased risk and a reduced quality of life!

There is only one general election remaining and with it the final opportunity to turn this around!

Andy Burnham’s position is revealing: he seems to accept that many people are uncomfortable sharing a neighbourhood with migrants whose backgrounds are unknown, yet his answer is that every community should take its share of responsibility for housing them — which raises the obvious question: does that include his own?
