This Diabetes Week, let’s talk about why regular diabetes check-ups matter. They help spot changes early, support the right treatment at the right time, and can help prevent serious complications.

During Carers’ Week 2026 we are sharing the experiences of some of our colleagues to show how it affects their lives and how important it is for us to have supportive employment policies in place and awareness training for managers. Today we share a story from Lee (not their real name) and the challenges they faced at work when their manager changed. They said: “I love my family. I love my work. I shouldn't have to choose between them.”

Top tip: Did you know DCHS carers’ staff network offers dedicated training sessions for managers to improve understanding of carers’ experiences and the support available.

Today, DCHS was recognised for its commitment to supporting colleagues with caring responsibilities, receiving the Carer Friendly Employer Quality Mark from the Derbyshire Carers Association.

The award was presented during a Celebration of Unpaid Carers at Ilkeston Community Hospital, which brought together carers, support organisations and local dignitaries. Attendees included Lord-Lieutenant of Derbyshire Elizabeth Fothergill, High Sheriff of Derbyshire Iftikhar and DCHS Chair Julie Houlder. DCHS Chief Executive Jim Austin took part in an interactive board game developed by The Centre for Care, exploring some of the everyday challenges faced by unpaid carers, and we heard powerful personal stories from colleagues about the impact of their caring responsibilities.

DCHS Carers' Staff Network chair Jemma Walker said: “It was so lovely to see so many people to come together to celebrate the achievements of the carers network. A particular highlight was receiving the Quality Kitemark, a significant achievement that demonstrates our dedication to creating a carer-friendly workplace. This recognition reflects the hard work, passion, and collaboration of colleagues, carers, champions, and leaders who have helped embed a culture where carers feel valued, supported, and empowered to thrive.”

A huge thank you to Jemma and the DCHS Carers' Staff Network for organising such a meaningful event - and for their ongoing work supporting carers throughout DCHS. 💙

Do you know the 4 Ts of type 1 diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes is a condition where your body cannot make a hormone called insulin. This causes your blood sugar to get too high, and needs to be managed every day.

The most common symptoms are the 4 Ts:

🟠 Toilet
🟠 Thirsty
🟠 Tired
🟠 Thinner

If you think you or your child has any of these symptoms, ask for an urgent GP appointment or call 111.
