At 13:46 today, Firefighters from Chew Magna, alongside colleagues across the Service, observed a minute’s silence to remember all those who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks 25 years ago, including the 343 firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice.

We remember the victims, their families, the emergency responders and all those affected by the events of that day.

Their courage, bravery and sacrifice will never be forgotten. 🇺🇸🚒

Today, we will join communities across the world in remembering the victims of the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001, when four hijacked aircraft were used in coordinated attacks in the United States, including the destruction of New York's World Trade Center.

Thousands of people lost their lives, including 343 firefighters from the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) who responded to help those in danger.

At 1.46pm, the exact UK time the first aircraft struck the North Tower, firefighters and staff across our Service will observe a one-minute silence. Flags will be lowered to half-mast, and operational crews will gather in an act of remembrance and respect.

Today, we honour the courage, selflessness and sacrifice of all those who responded, and we remember everyone whose lives were forever changed by the events of that day.

This isn’t simply about waste compliance. It’s about keeping people safe.

Every day, Pennys Group collects skips from our customers and receives waste loads across our transfer stations. From the moment that waste enters one of our skips or arrives at one of our sites, it will be moved, tipped, sorted and processed using heavy plant and machinery.

If a Lithium-ion battery is hidden amongst that waste, our drivers, weighbridge staff and site operatives may have no way of knowing it is there.

A battery that looks small and harmless can be crushed, punctured or damaged during collection, compaction, tipping or processing. If that happens, it can ignite without warning and cause a rapidly developing fire - putting our employees, customers, emergency services, equipment, facilities and the surrounding environment at risk.

By the time a hidden battery reaches our weighbridge or processing plant, it may already be too late to prevent the danger.

That is why prevention has to start before the waste is put into one of our skips or sent to one of our sites.

We are asking all Pennys Group customers to help us by making you understand the risks and never place Lithium-ion batteries or battery-powered items into general waste or skips. Batteries should be removed and disposed of through an appropriate battery recycling route.

Please take a few minutes to read the information outlined in our flyer and share it with anyone responsible for disposing of waste on your sites.

One battery in the wrong place is all it takes. By working together, we can protect our people, our sites and our communities.

🚒 📟 Industrial Fire – Brislington 🔥

Our pump attended the serious industrial fire in Brislington this week.

Our crew supported the incident with firefighting operations, High Volume Pump (HVP) operations, and helped maintain a vital water supply to the fireground during the initial stages using the water bowser.

It was a long night for the crew, before returning the following evening to assist with packing up the large amount of HVP hose deployed at the incident.

Update –9.00am, 2 September
We are continuing to respond to the fire at an industrial unit on Emery Road, Brislington.
Our attendance has now been scaled down to five fire engines, but crews remain at the scene and are still working to fully extinguish the fire.
Cordons remain in place, and we are asking people to continue to avoid the area where possible.
Residents and businesses nearby should continue to keep windows and doors closed while there is smoke in the area.

Update 7.20pm
The fire at an industrial unit on Emery Road, Brislington, is now under control.
We have scaled back our attendance to eight fire engines, with crews remaining at the scene overnight to monitor hot spots and ensure the fire is fully extinguished.
Thankfully, there are no reported casualties.
We are still asking residents and local businesses to keep their windows and doors closed as there is still smoke in the air.

Update 4:00pm
We are still responding to a fire at an industrial unit on Emery Road, Brislington, Bristol.
Fire crews were called at 2.27pm, and 16 fire engines are on the scene, including our command unit and aerial ladder.
If you live or work nearby, please keep your windows and doors closed due to a significant amount of smoke in the area.
Please avoid the area where possible. Local cordons and road closures are in place, so traffic delays are likely.

Due to a tall building incident, our crew has been mobilised to Temple Fire Station this evening, providing standby fire cover while other crews are committed. 🚒

⏰ 15:40 – BARN FIRE 🔥🚜
📍Dundry, Bristol

Our pump was mobilised this afternoon to a barn fire affecting bales and machinery.

Crews are still in attendance and working to bring the fire under control. 🚒🔥

UPDATE (30.08.26 - 06:14) The fire was extinguished last night and firefighters left the scene after ensuring its safety. An inspection by crews will take place this morning.

Our pump was mobilised to an automatic fire alarm activation at a property in Bishop Sutton this afternoon.

Crews attended to investigate the cause of the activation. 🚒

⏰ 04:03 – SMELL OF BURNING WITHIN A NURSING HOME 🔥

An early morning call for the crew, with our pump mobilised to reports of a smell of burning within a nursing home.

Following an investigation, firefighters located an electrical heater/socket which had caught fire whilst plugged in. The incident was dealt with and the area made safe. 🚒
