West Sussex residents have had enough.

After more than two years of uncertainty over the future structure of local government in West Sussex this needs sorting – and fast.
Our councils should be doing their job, focussing on repairing roads, investing in schools and delivering high-quality children's and adult social care, rather than being tied up in repeated consultations and structural reviews on some "top-down" reorganisation plans which no one ever asked for.

Ideally, she should just shelve these plans entirely. But if they are determined to go ahead, it should be a single unitary authority covering the whole of West Sussex consistent with the arrangements already confirmed for neighbouring Brighton & Hove and East Sussex. That is less disruptive than smashing West Sussex into two, illogical pieces.

I welcome that as a result of opposition from myself and others, the government has at least postponed the breakup of West Sussex today.

This whole proposal was costly and an unnecessary distraction and should now be shelved entirely.
The Labour government and our Lib Dem-led councils have embarrassed themselves by trying to smash up tradition in their own political self-interest but now let’s hope that the whole thing is behind us.

I thank the more than 2,000 residents who signed the petition at savewestsussex.org and urge everyone to remain vigilant until the destruction of our county has been firmly shelved.

Our MP and local officials need to step up. When are we going to see words turned into action? We need a credible plan, not just politicians saying what they think we want to hear.

We were promised action to curb this blight on our local environment. Nearly 2 years on from the General Election, the discharges are still a daily reality for Chichester.
