Following the public meeting held yesterday regarding the draft proposals by the Church Commissioners to close St Aidan’s Church, comment forms are now available for members of the public who wish to make their views known.

Completed forms will be submitted to the Church Commissioners as part of the consultation process. Forms can be collected from Hutton House and should be returned there no later than Tuesday 30th June.

Whether you support or oppose the proposals, or simply wish to share your views, we encourage you to take part in the consultation and ensure that your voice is heard.

The Town Council will be submitting a response on behalf of residents.

We’ve added a quiet minibus to our South Shields bus trip, for those who would prefer it.

Spaces are limited, so please get your wristbands soon to avoid missing out on this grand day out.

Chilton Town Council has opened this year’s Community Grants funding round.

Local organisations are encouraged to apply. Further details, including the Community Grants Policy and application form, are available on the Town Council website: https://chiltondurham-tc.gov.uk/index.php/2026/05/22/community-grants-2026/.

The closing date for applications is Friday 26th June at 12.00pm.

Chilton Town Councillors choose not to claim allowances available to them for carrying out their public duties, to allow these funds to be redirected into community grants that support local groups and projects which enhance life in the town.

The Town Council is pleased to see the hanging baskets being installed throughout the village today, bringing a welcome touch of summer colour to our streets.

To prevent damage to the flowers in the baskets in front of the Wheatsheaf, the flags previously displayed on the basket poles outside the public house need to be removed by our contractor, as they are likely to damage the displays in windy weather.

We hope that residents and visitors will enjoy the floral displays and the contribution they make to the appearance of our village during the months ahead.

Durham County Council is consulting on a new Selective Licensing Scheme proposal.

The consultation covers the reasons for selective licensing, proposed selective licensing areas, proposed licensing fees and proposed licence conditions.

Landlords, privately renting tenants, residents, businesses and those with an interest in housing are requested to respond to the consultation, which closes on 12th August 2026.

St Aidan’s Church and Pavilion Park Listed as Non-Designated Heritage Assets


I am pleased to advise that following our application I have confirmation that both St Aidan’s Church and Pavilion have been listed as "Non-designated Heritage Asset” (HDHA).


The term non-designated heritage asset is the formal term used in planning guidance and policy and gives great weight to the protection of heritage assets and their significance. This means that their contribution and local interest must be considered in the determination of planning applications due to ‘The value of a heritage asset to this and future generations because of its heritage interest’.

This means that any application for planning permission for proposed alterations, extensions or demolitions must consider how the changes will impact on the asset's local significance.

Developers would be expected to explore all reasonable alternatives to preserve or restore the building, or site, and planning authorities must weigh-up the scale of harm or loss against the significance of the asset when making a decision.

This gives St Aidan’s Church and Pavilion Park the same status as others in the region including the Tommy Sculpture at Seaham, Harrisons Organ Works in Durham City, the Old Smithy in Sedgefield, Shildon Wagon Works and Hackworth Park Shildon.

We will provide more details on the benefits of the designation at the Public Meeting to discuss the closure of St Aidan’s Church Thursday 18th June 6:30pm in Hutton House.

Chilton Town Council will host a public meeting for residents to have their say about the notification of proposed closure of St Aidan’s Church received from the Church Commissioners.

The meeting will be held on Thursday 18th June 2026 at 6.30pm at Hutton House.
