*** 🚁🛠️⚡️SAAE Visit - 1 June 2026⚡️🛠️🚁***

One of the main aspects of Lyneham is its association with both the REME and Defence School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (DSEME), and on Monday 1 June we were lucky enough to be able to visit part of the DSEME to learn more about what they do!

Alongside members of 1244 Swindon Squadron RAFAC, cadets and staff paid visit to the School of Army Aeronautical Engineering (SAAE) to learn more about the work they do to train new recruits in maintaining and repairing the airframes used by colleagues in the Army Air Corps while on deployments.

Cadets (and staff!!) had the opportunity to get close to the airframes, sitting in Gazelles and Apaches that are used to consolidate the training of the recruits before they can be sent onto deployments.

We’d like to offer out our thanks to the team at SAAE Lyneham for allowing us and our colleagues at 1244 to come down for an evening - everyone had a great time, and it was a fantastic opportunity to learn more about our surrounds at Lyneham and what may be on offer in different military spaces for career progression!

*** 💃🏼🎉✈️ CARNIVAL AND 40S WEEKEND ✈️🎉💃🏼***

Getting out in the community is something we enjoy doing, no matter whether we’re in uniform or civilian kit - and the last couple of weekends have been no exception!

This most recent weekend, cadets and staff attended the Wootton Bassett Carnival, assisting with Santa’s deck chair and taking in some 1-up mushrooms with the Wacky Racers! (You just had to be there…😅😂) While the weather didn’t play ball for the majority of the procession, all those who took part enjoyed it a lot and had a great time!

The weekend prior saw The REME Museum host their 1940s Weekend, featuring singing, dancing, and an appearance from a pilot straight out of a Spitfire…or was it a Lancaster? 🤔

The event itself saw Sgt Lennie and Flt Sgt Dee-Cutler (the pilot in question!) put on their dancing shoes in a Charleston Stroll with a local Jive group, and a whole host of vintage vehicles and stalls in attendance (with even a handful of familiar faces across our wider Wing too!) 💃🏼🕺

Events like these serve as a fantastic way for our cadets and staff to get out in the community and share in their interests outside of Sqn - and we still have more activities as we get through the summer! ☀️😎

***👨‍🏫🟡👓TRAINING AWARDS CELEBRATIONS👓🟡👨‍🏫***

We’ve had a bumper week for awards, and they don’t show any signs of stopping anytime soon!

Following his Method of Instruction Assessment last night with our Wing Training Officer, Flt Lt Fell, we are pleased to announce that Sgt Cox has now completed his Method of Instruction, and is able to wear his yellow lanyard on his uniform!

Additionally, following several months of hard work and study, we are pleased to announce that Sgt Stewart has received his BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Teamwork and Personal Development in the Community with the Cadet Vocational College!

Congratulations to both of you - we can’t wait to see how you use your skills on Sqn!

**** 👏🏻🩵⚙️ ROTARY THANK YOU ⚙️🩵👏🏻 ****

A massive THANK YOU to the Rotary Club of Royal Wootton Bassett & District, for their kind donation following our past support of the Rotary Challenge - an event for youth groups within the Lyneham and Royal Wootton Bassett area.

Support like this goes a long way towards facilities on our Sqn like flight simulators, equipment for syllabus training, and for any equipment for Duke of Edinburgh Awards like rucksacks, compasses and tents!

Thank you very much again to the Rotary Club, whom we hope to continue supporting in the future!

***** ✈️🔊📚BUCCANEER AND BRITANNIA TRIP - 28/03/2026 📚🔊✈️ ****

Sometimes, our cadets and staff do other things outside of our regularly scheduled parade night activities, and we were lucky to have the chance to learn a bit more about these!

On Saturday 28th March, we had the opportunity to have a look around the RAF Bristol Britannia XM496 with some fantastic knowledge from both CI Higgins and Cdt Higgins, who talked us through the cockpit and all the different operations of the plane (previously based at RAF Lyneham, and also the name of our new cadets flight when they first start on Sqn!), where we were able to sit in the seats, watch a video of the last landing of the very plane we were on, and have a look at facilities that aren’t always on more modern planes - did you know the Britannia used to have outlets for iron lungs, used to treat patients with polio? 😲🫁

We also had the chance to visit the Buccaneer Aviation Group, where we were hosted by our very own Flt Sgt Dee-Cutler, who volunteers to assist with the heritage and preservation of the Blackburn Buccaneer! He gave us a brief overview of the plane itself, with assistance from the team, and allowed our cadets and staff to look around the planes (and even sit in the cockpit of one of them!). After a brief unexpected hail storm ☔️, we were able to follow one of the two planes out to the top of the runway for it to do an engine run and lower its wings for us! All personnel were given ear defence to wear, which helped as the noise from the engine run reached a whopping 100db (at least, according to Sgt Lennie’s watch!) ✈️🔊

We would like to extend a massive thank you to all the amazing volunteers who work to preserve these historic aircraft for future generations for allowing us to come and take a look - the cadets all agreed it was the best way they’d spent a Saturday! 😎🛬

****💪🏻⛑️🗣️ BLUE LEADERSHIP AND EFA 🗣️⛑️💪🏻****

Last night saw two important activities taking place on Sqn, along with some visits from members of the sector!

We were first introduced to Sgt Carder of 878 Highworth Supermarine Squadron RAF Air Cadets, who is our new Cadet Sector SNCO. Sgt Carder had the opportunity to speak with cadets and staff, and get to know them in her new role, as well as watching some Blue Leadership exercises in motion (with some more of our newer intake passing their Blue Leadership!).

The other activity for the evening was Essential First Aid training, taught by APO Martin - also from 878 Sqn! Cadets were taught the essential knowledge to refresh or gain their First Aid qualifications, including:
- Primary Survey
- Resuscitation
- Recovery Position
- Bleeds
and more!

A well done to all four, who have passed the qualification - and thank you again to APO Martin and Sgt Carder for paying us a visit! 😎
