How to avoid being a wild fire starter

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service (ECFRS) was called to 6 large field fires in 48 hours last week, follow this advice to help protect our countryside in the hot and dry weather.

Wildfires are very dangerous, spreading fast, changing direction and threatening wildlife, livestock, domestic animals, the environment, property and people.

Most wildfires are started by humans, only 10 to 15% of wildfires happen on their own in nature, follow this advice so that everyone can enjoy our beautiful open spaces and help protect our beautiful countryside.

How you can prevent wildfires

Avoid having bonfires and barbecues in the countryside – cook your food at home and have a picnic instead.

Dispose of your ci******es properly, make sure they are out – never throw cigarette ends on the ground or out of a car window.

Take your litter home – sunlight magnified by glass bottles can spark a Fire
Report fires immediately by calling 999

Use the free What3words app to help identify your exact location

Report irresponsible behaviour – if you see or suspect someone acting suspiciously, recklessly or irresponsibly in the countryside contact the Police on 101 or pass information anonymously to Fire Stoppers on 0800 169 5558

Talk to your children about the dangers of playing with fire and matches – keep matches and lighters stored well away from children and teenagers

Keeping your home safe from fire is an important part of living safe and well. That’s why we offer free Home Safety Visits to all residents across Essex.

We're taking action to protect Essex’s green spaces and improve local areas.

Through our 100-Day Plan, we're reviewing the Green Belt to help protect valuable land and prioritising development on council owned brownfield sites.

We're also launching a Pride of Place Clean Up Fund to give you cleaner streets, parks and public spaces.

“People want to feel proud of the places they live in.

“Through our 100-Day Plan, we are focusing on practical actions that will help create cleaner, greener and more attractive communities across our great county.

"Whether it is tackling litter, improving local environments or protecting our green spaces, these are the issues that people tell us matter to them.

“The 100-Day Plan provides clear actions that will help restore Essex to its rightful place, as a county to be truly proud of.” Cllr Jeff Bray, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Planning and Heritage.
