Another busy month for the on-call crew here at Chorley Fire Station!

Alongside responding to 32 incidents and providing fire cover across the area, our crew have completed 22 hours of drill and training, keeping our skills sharp and making sure we’re ready for whatever comes our way.

We also held our Charity Car Wash, and a huge thank you goes to everyone who came down, had their car washed and donated. Your support was greatly appreciated! ❤️

As August comes to an end, it’s straight into September for the crew at Chorley.

🚒 DRILL NIGHT | JOINT BA TRAINING 🔥

Last night, our on-call crew at Chorley were joined by on-call firefighters from Bamber Bridge Fire Station and Skelmersdale Fire Station for a joint breathing apparatus (BA) drill.

The scenario involved a building fire with casualties reported inside. Crews were committed in breathing apparatus, working together to locate and extinguish the fire while carrying out search and rescue operations for the missing casualties.

The exercise gave crews the opportunity to practise working in challenging conditions, communicating effectively and coordinating BA teams from different stations.

Although last night’s incident was simulated, the scenario is very real. Building fires with people trapped inside do happen, and when they do, we need to be ready to respond quickly, safely and effectively.

Joint training like this helps make sure that when crews from across the county come together at an incident, we’re prepared to work as one team. 🚒🔥

🔥 Breathing Apparatus Training – Understanding Flashover 🔥

On-call firefighters from across the county are currently undertaking their Initial Breathing Apparatus (BA) training — a course that all operational firefighters complete as part of their training and development.

As part of the course, firefighters are taught how to recognise, respond to and mitigate the signs of a flashover — one of the most dangerous phenomena firefighters can encounter at a fire.

🔥 So, what is a flashover?

A flashover occurs when the heat within a compartment fire becomes so intense that combustible materials and gases throughout the room reach their ignition temperature almost simultaneously. This can result in the fire rapidly transitioning from a localised fire to full-room involvement in a matter of seconds.

Firefighters are trained to recognise the warning signs of an impending flashover, including increasing heat, changes in smoke conditions and the behaviour of the fire. Through effective firefighting techniques, including correct use of the branch, ventilation considerations and cooling of hot gases, crews can work to reduce the likelihood and severity of flashover.

BA training is a vital part of ensuring our firefighters have the knowledge, skills and confidence required to operate safely in some of the most challenging environments they may encounter.

🚒 July Round-Up 🚒

July has been another busy month for the on-call crew at Chorley Fire Station, with 44 mobilisations throughout the month.

Our firefighters have responded to a wide variety of incidents, from providing standby cover at stations across the North West, to attending large-scale incidents requiring multiple fire and rescue resources, as well as the everyday calls such as automatic fire alarm activations and everything in between.

As always, we’d like to thank our on-call firefighters for their continued commitment, along with their families and employers, whose support makes our emergency response possible.

🚨 Mobilisation 🚨

At 1937hrs yesterday evening, L54P2 was mobilised to provide standby cover at Skelmersdale Fire Station while local crews dealt with a serious incident in the area.

Shortly after 2200hrs, our crew was then mobilised to provide relief for the Skelmersdale appliances at the ongoing incident.

After completing our duties, L54P2 returned to Chorley Fire Station just before midnight.

🚒 Mobilisation 🚒

At 15:57hrs yesterday, L54P2 was mobilised to Preston Fire Station to provide standby cover due to a large-scale incident in the area.

Whilst on standby, the crew was mobilised to a house fire in the Walton-le-Dale area.

On arrival, crews found that a kitchen fire, believed to have been started by a tumble dryer, had already been extinguished prior to the fire service’s arrival. The exact circumstances surrounding the fire remain unclear, and the incident is currently under investigation.

Following the incident, L54P2 returned to Preston to continue providing standby cover before returning to Chorley Fire Station at approximately 20:30hrs.

🔥 Tumble Dryer Safety 🔥

Tumble dryers are a common cause of accidental house fires, so a few simple checks can help reduce the risk:

• Clean the lint filter after every use.
• Ensure the appliance has adequate ventilation.
• Avoid running your tumble dryer whilst you’re asleep or out of the house.
• If you notice burning smells, unusual noises or overheating, stop using the appliance immediately.
• Register your appliance with the manufacturer so you’ll be notified of any product safety recalls.
