Gloucestershire Cave Rescue Group

Gloucestershire Cave Rescue Group The GCRG provides a service to cavers in the Forest of Dean area, The Cotswolds and the Thames Valley to Reading. The Group has Charity status.

It also provides rescue support to our neighbouring cave rescue teams. The Gloucestershire Cave Rescue Group (GCRG) was formed in 1962 by local cavers who recognised the need for cave rescue facilities in an area that was fast growing in popularity. The Group has been called out a number of times over the years since its formation to rescues in the Caves and Iron Mines of the Forest of Dean, the S

tone Mines of the Cotswolds and to Otter Hole. Assistance to cave rescue teams from South Wales with extended duration rescues in their area has also been provided. The Group also has a support role in assisting the Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA) and as a valuable manpower resource for the Police & Fire and Rescue Services. A recent expansion of the Group’s activities, in collaboration with the Mines Rescue Team and the local HSE Mines Inspector, has been the formation of a ‘Mines Response Team ‘ for the ‘Free Mines’ (Coal Mines) within the Forest of Dean. With the growth in caving as a sport and as an activity for youth / adventure groups, combined with the discovery and exploration of more cave systems (the area now boasts the 10th longest cave in the UK, approximately 14km in length), unfortunately, so does the need for a cave rescue group. Today the Group has some of the most up to date rescue equipment available, all stored at its Headquarters located near to Cinderford, along with the Group’s Land Rover. The Group’s direct response area has grown over the years to now cover the Forest of Dean; the Wye Valley; the Cotswolds and parts of the Thames Valley extending to the Reading area. The Group, from rescue members to wardens / committee members are entirely voluntary and has no subscriptions. No grant funding is received, although we do receive support from the Forest of Dean District Council and Mountain Rescue England and Wales. Primary funding is achieved through donations combined with fund raising activities organised by the members. Membership currently stands at c100 people, all of whom are primarily sport cavers. The Group has a training programme which aims to ensure that all members reach a minimum level of cave rescue knowledge and experience. Those who wish may expand their knowledge and expertise to specialise in certain areas of rescue and take a more active role within the group. Training takes place throughout the year on a quarterly basis and this can involve both surface and underground sessions. Combined training with other cave rescue teams also takes place. Recent developments have seen a major increase in training with the other Emergency Services (Police, Fire & Rescue, Ambulance and Mines Rescue). Training is also coordinated through the local caving clubs during the periods between the quarterly sessions. The Group produces a periodic newsletter, which is distributed free of charge to the membership and holds various social events throughout the year.

Another good GCRG training day yesterday with over 45 team members attending. We practiced rope rescue techniques, ladder climbing and abseiling with lifelines, casualty rewarming techniques and setting up the Surface Control Trailer Awning etc. The weather stayed kind and an excellent day was had by all. Lots of good rescue practice and a chance for people to socialise as well over complimentary lunchtime bacon and egg rolls. Thank you also to Makita Tools for their demonstrations.

A big thanks to all who have been involved with the work that has resulted in the Non Payment of VED on Voluntary Emergency Services vehicles. As a team who's vehicle had lost it's Ambulance Status and therefore going to have to now find the extra funds to cover the cost of the VED this could not have come at a better time. Lobbies of MP's, letter writing and generally making the right people aware of the situation has paid off. Reiterate a big thanks to everyone.

Well done to all who took part. Really nice to see the GCRG Depot facilities being made use of.

Sunday 21st September 2025 a large group of runners took part in the Howling Bull Run. GCRG members were on hand to undertake marshaling of a number of points along the route. Thanks to all for a great morning in the woods before returning to Walford Village Hall for drinks and cakes. See you all next year.

SRT Training Weekend, 12-13 July at the GCRG Depot & underground.

A training workshop is being run for a visiting club at the Depot and others are welcome to join. This will cater for total beginners to more experienced cavers as we will have a number of trainers. If time allows, we can organise some rope rescue and rigging exercises too.

You will need SRT kit + additional karabiners, helmet, old clothes.

Depending upon weather, we will either aim to go underground on Sunday or practice on a local cliff if we want a sun tan.

Please contact [email protected] if you’re interested.

Another great training day with excellent team work at Bixhead Stone Mine. 56 team members worked together on the surface and underground to look after a variety of casualties and stretcher some through the mine.
