Busy day for our team yesterday! 13/08/26)

We responded to 4 incidents throughout the day.

🚨 Call Out – 15/08/2026 -🚨

Incident number 1 of 4: Incident 113/2026
Paged at 04:22 hours. Concern for person in the water near the Kingpin Arcade. Male quickly located and handed over to ambulance for further care.

Incident 2 of 4: Incident 114/2026
Team paged at 12:03 hours, to a report of a missing 7 year old male, last seen in the water. Team stood down prior yo leaving the station. The boy was found fit and well, and reunited with his parents.

Incident 3 of 4: Incident 115/2026
Team paged at 14:19 hours, to a report of a missing adult male and a child near the Fitties.
Stood down en-route, both found fit and well. Reunited with their family.

Incident 4 of 4: Incident 116/2026
Team paged at 20:25 hours to a report of a vulnerable missing adult male.

The male was located on the beach near the old Buck Beck bench. Medical observations were carried out by the team. He was handed over to an ambulance crew for ongoing care.

The team returned to the station, washed down and restowed kit ready for our next call. Stood down and returned home by midnight.

Well done to the all of the new recruits for Cleethorpes, Donna Nook, Hull and Withernsea Volunteer Coastguard Rescue Teams.

They have all been subjected to 5 days of intensive training, both physical and theory, to get them to the required standard to assist their colleagues at their relevant Coastguard Stations.

July turned out to be a busy month for Cleethorpes Coastguard.

During the course of the month our team were called out to incidents 15 times. These callouts included multiple calls to persons being cut-off by the tide, medical incidents and calls to lost or missing children.

We have also had 7 training sessions including some with our neighbouring teams of Donna Nook and Hull, these include regular training sessions to keep our knowledge and skills up-to-date and exercises to put our knowledge into practice and make sure we are ready for situations that might not come up very often but are important for us to be ready for, such as a recent training exercise where the team evacuated an injured casualty from a moored vessel.

July also proved to be busy for our team trying to spread knowledge and awareness of water safety and coastal safety with our volunteers attending several schools and other groups or events in the area, talking to various age groups from young children through to adults about being safe around our coastline and inland bodies of water.

So far this year there have been a spate of incidents throughout the country where members of the public have tragically lost their lives in the water. We want people to enjoy the water but ask that you do so safely, with a few tips to help.

Always check the tides times. In Cleethorpes and Humberston clear the sandbanks 5 hours before high-tide to avoid being cut-off.
Always wear a life jacket. It could save your life.
If you go out on the water, carry a form of communication (VHF radio or phone) in water proof pouch, also let somebody know what time you plan to return so they can call for assistance if you are late back.
Be careful jumping into bodies of water, there could be hidden objects under the surface, or cold water shock could set in which can be incredibly serious.

Remember - Float-to-live
If you find yourself in trouble around the coast - Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Tuesday night training 🚤

This week’s training exercise took the team to HCA Marina, where we responded to a simulated incident involving a crew member on board a 10-metre sailing yacht.

The scenario involved a casualty who had fallen below deck after losing their footing as the vessel moved unexpectedly alongside the pontoon. The casualty was conscious and breathing but was unable to stand, complaining of severe lower back pain with numbness in one leg, requiring spinal precautions and careful handling.

The exercise provided an excellent opportunity to practice:
* Dynamic risk assessment around the marina and vessel
* Safe boarding procedures and casualty assessment
* Positioning the yacht alongside to allow a safe and effective casualty extraction
* Manual handling and casualty packaging
* Stretcher use in the restricted environment below deck
* Coordinated casualty extraction up the companionway

Training in realistic environments like this helps ensure our Coastguard Rescue Officers are prepared to respond safely and effectively when called upon.

A big thank you to HCA Marina and the yacht owner for allowing us to use their facilities for this valuable training exercise.

HEATWAVE - WATER SAFETY ADVICE

In the UK, water safety organisations have already reported 19 fatalities in water-related incidents this year (15 of which were children) as warmer weather draws more people to the coast, rivers, lakes, quarries, and reservoirs.

The reports from France are a stark reminder that extreme heat and water can be a deadly combination.

French authorities have confirmed that 40 people have drowned since the heatwave began, with many of the deaths occurring as people sought relief from record-breaking temperatures by swimming in rivers, lakes, and other unsupervised locations. Most of the victims were reported to be young people.

Heatwave Water Safety Advice:

Never enter water to cool off suddenly. Cold water shock can cause involuntary gasping, rapid breathing, and loss of control, even on hot days.

Avoid swimming alone. Go with others and let someone know where you are.

Use lifeguarded beaches and supervised swimming areas whenever possible.

Stay away from reservoirs, quarries, and fast-flowing rivers. Hidden currents, steep sides, and cold temperatures make them particularly dangerous.

Do not enter the water after drinking alcohol or taking drugs.
Wear a life jacket or buoyancy aid when boating, paddleboarding or participating in water sports.

Keep children under constant supervision near any body of water.

If someone gets into difficulty, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard (at the coast) or emergency services inland.

Avoid entering the water yourself unless trained to do so.

If You Fall Into Cold Water

Remember the "Float to Live" advice promoted by the UK's Royal National Lifeboat Institution:

Tilt your head back with your ears submerged.
Relax and try to control your breathing.
Move your hands gently to stay afloat.
Once breathing is under control, call for help or swim to safety if possible.

As temperatures remain high across the UK, authorities are urging people to enjoy the water safely and to treat natural bodies of water with caution, regardless of how warm the weather feels.

Meet Sandi Starfish!

As we head into another busy summer season, Sandi has arrived in Cleethorpes to help support a fantastic initiative aimed at preventing children and vulnerable adults from becoming separated from their families whilst enjoying our coastline.

Every year, thousands of visitors flock to Cleethorpes beach. While everyone is here to enjoy themselves, it’s surprisingly easy for children and vulnerable adults to become lost in busy crowds. When that happens, it can involve multiple agencies including HM Coastguard, Humberside Police, Beach Safety teams and the RNLI.

The Sandi Starfish initiative provides clearly identifiable meeting points along the seafront and FREE wristbands where parents and guardians can write their contact details. If a child becomes separated from their family, it helps reunite them quickly and safely.

You can collect a FREE Sandi Starfish wristband and find out more about the scheme throughout the summer.

So next time you’re passing the station, be sure to stop by and say hello to our newest recruit! ⭐
