Hertfordshire Constabulary – Community Warning on Graffiti and Criminal Damage
Hertfordshire Constabulary is aware of recent increases in graffiti, related criminal damage and residents front doors being kicked in the Codicote area. We are working with Codicote Parish Council and North Herts Council to identify those responsible and to prevent further incidents.
Graffiti is not a harmless act. It is a criminal offence under the Criminal Damage Act 1971 and carries significant consequences. Damage caused to public buildings, street furniture, signs, parks or private property not only spoils the appearance of the village but also costs local taxpayers money to remove.
Legal Consequences
Individuals found committing graffiti or other forms of damage may face:
• Arrest and prosecution
• A criminal record, which can affect employment, education, and travel
• Fines or compensation orders
• Community service
• Seizure of spray paints or markers from those under 16 under the Anti-social Behaviour Act 2003
Parents and guardians should be aware that young people involved in graffiti may be held responsible for the costs of repairs.
Our Response
Officers are increasing patrols in affected areas and reviewing CCTV opportunities. We are also encouraging residents to report incidents promptly to help us identify patterns and offenders.
How Residents Can Help
• Report graffiti or ongoing criminal damage by calling 101 or reporting online at Report | Hertfordshire Constabulary
• If you witness a crime in progress, always call 999.
• Provide CCTV, doorbell footage, or descriptions of individuals acting suspiciously.
• Encourage young people to understand the consequences of criminal damage and to respect community spaces.
A Message to Those Responsible
Graffiti may feel anonymous, but it isn’t. Offenders will be identified, and those responsible will be dealt with robustly. The impact on the community is real, and we urge anyone involved to stop immediately and consider the long-term consequences of their actions.
Hertfordshire Constabulary remains committed to keeping Codicote safe, clean, and welcoming for everyone.
Please be vigilant and report any suspicious activities in the area.
