Wivenhoe Town Council’s Objection to the Local Plan

Wivenhoe Town Council has submitted an objection to Colchester’s Submission Draft Local Plan

The Council strongly objects to the proposed allocation of site PP24 (Land North-West of Fire Station, Wivenhoe). The Council argues that the plan fails to demonstrate the deliverability of housing targets and essential infrastructure, including wastewater, transport, healthcare and education provision. It questions the evidence supporting the expansion of PP24 from 175 to approximately 200 dwellings, highlighting a lack of reassessment despite previous negative findings on coalescence, biodiversity and agricultural impacts. The Council contends that development would undermine the Wivenhoe Neighbourhood Plan, damage important wildlife corridors, increase traffic congestion, and place unacceptable pressure on local infrastructure.

Remembering Jim

This morning the community gathered with us to remember our colleague Jim as we unveiled a new bench in his honour.

You can find the bench in the dog exercise area on the KGV - a place that Jim was very proud to create. Please take the time to see it, take a seat, enjoy the peace and remember a lovely man.

Thank you to everyone who joined us- it meant a lot to Jim's family.

Wivenhoe Memories Exhibition 2026

The weekend of the 19-20 September saw the return the Wivenhoe Memories Exhibition. This was the fifth revival following the untimely death of its founder, John Stewart, in 2018. This year saw the event moved to September rather than its usual August Bank Holiday slot so as to tie in with the Heritage Weekends. This move seems to have been widely welcomed, certainly if visitor numbers are anything to go by. Thanks as always to Michael Smither for his dedication and hard work on this exhibition. It is always appreciated by so many people.

Plans are already afoot for the 2027 edition which will be looking back to Wivenhoe in the 18th Century. If you would like to help out in any way please get in touch.

Battle of Arnhem Service and Ceremony at Colchester War Memorial Thursday September 17th.

On 17 September our Mayor Cllr Glynis Hailes-Morley and Envoy Mark Norrington represented Wivenhoe at this service, which was also a celebration of the bonds of friendship between Colchester and Renkum, Netherlands, where the battle took place.

Also present were the Mayor of Colchester and councillors, and representatives from the Colchester Garrison, Colchester Police, the Royal Netherlands Army, the local Polish Community and local schoolchildren, who laid sunflowers on the War Memorial.

Special thanks to Colchester Sergeant Major, WO1 Si Vono who did a magnificent job.

Remembering Jim- Saturday 3 October at 11am

As many of you know our lovely Jim who worked here for 25 years sadly passed away in May.

You are all invited to join us in remembering him on Saturday 3 October at 11am at the Dog Exercise Area at the top of the KGV where we will be unveiling a bench in his honour.

Everyone is welcome- and please bring your dogs if you have one as Jim would have wanted.

THANK YOU WONDERFUL WIVENHOE!
On a glorious Wivenhoe Community Day on Saturday, it was extremely uplifting and rewarding for WTC staff and councillors to see people of all ages enjoying the music and multiple activities on offer. To top it all off, our Finance Officer has confirmed that the Mayor’s charity stall raised the magnificent sum of £702, which will be shared equally by my chosen charities, Reaching Out at Christmas, Wivenhoe Foodbank and Monday Club. The raffle has been drawn by a member of the public, Chris Hirst, and winners are being contacted.

I can’t thank WIVENHOE BUSINESSES enough for their incredible generosity in donating such amazing raffle prizes- we couldn’t have achieved that result without them. They are (in no particular order): -
