NI TROUBLES BILL
The Shoulder to Shoulder initiative is encouraging supporters to make their views known to MPs while the NI Troubles Bill remains under scrutiny. Public engagement is essential: MPs respond to the priorities of their constituents, and a clear, consistent message of opposition helps ensure that the concerns of veterans and affected communities are fully understood.

We are asking for partner organisations, supporters, and members of the public to visit https://www.shouldertoshoulder.uk/ and use the provided template to write to their MP.

The process is straightforward and takes only a few minutes, yet it significantly strengthens the collective voice calling for the Bill to be reconsidered or withdrawn.

By encouraging your networks, staff, volunteers, and community members to participate, you help amplify this message and demonstrate broad public commitment to protecting veterans, supporting families, and safeguarding peace.

Standing Shoulder to Shoulder means standing together, firmly and clearly against legislation that risks harm to those who have already carried enough.

Support veterans and ensure fair legal treatment by urging MPs to amend legislation concerning historic cases related to Operation BANNER and other military service.

Press Statement – Northern Ireland Veterans Movement (NIVM)

The Northern Ireland Veterans Movement (NIVM) welcomes Chris Bryant to his new role as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland and extends our congratulations as he takes up this critical post.

NIVM represents thousands of veterans who served during Operation Banner, many of whom continue to live with the long shadow of Legacy processes and repeated cycles of lawfare. We look forward to engaging constructively with the new Secretary of State at the earliest opportunity.

For years, veterans have felt unheard and unprotected. Under Hilary Benn’s tenure, there was a widespread belief among our members that their concerns were not listened to, and that the direction of travel on Legacy risked resurrecting the very lawfare that has already caused immense harm. The Northern Ireland Troubles Bill—deeply unpopular among veterans and now facing significant difficulties became emblematic of that disconnect. The NIVM is glad to see the end of an approach that, in the eyes of veterans, placed disproportionate weight on those representing perpetrators while side-lining those who served.

Chris Bryant now has an opportunity to reset the relationship between the Office of the Secretary of State and the veteran community. He can restore confidence that this government will treat veterans with fairness, dignity, and respect—rather than continuing policies that empower those who represent terrorist organisations and perpetuate lawfare against those who defended the community.

The NIVM urges the new Secretary of State to drop the hated Troubles Bill and to work with all Legacy stakeholders, including the veteran community, to build a credible, balanced, and just framework. Veterans deserve a Secretary of State who will champion their rights, understand their lived experience, and ensure that Legacy mechanisms do not become weapons used against those who served.

We look forward to meeting Chris Bryant urgently to outline the concerns of our members and to begin building a more constructive and respectful path forward.
