It's been another busy week for the crew at Colyton, mainly due to the hot weather conditions.

On Tuesday while a large fire was developing in Exeter the crew spent their day covering various other areas and investigated multiple Carbon Monoxide alarms all sounding in Honiton. The crew found no readings on their gas detector.

Wednesday they started the day joining the Axminster team to release two elderly people from their over turned car.
Almost immediately after dealing with the car crash both crews were sent to Upottery to a large area of farmland on fire.
Later as they were heading to Honiton fire station to cover that area due to the local crew being elsewhere they were diverted to Hemyock to assist another crew dealing with a large area of grassland on fire, next to a new housing estate.
Here they smothered the fire using a compressed air foam system along with good old fashioned beaters.
The local people were a great help, who had already started putting buckets of water on the fire prior to the fire services arrival.
They also provided us with ice cold drinks, which were really appreciated. 🚒
The main message from us at this time is please do not have any kind of open fire outside at the moment.

Once again another busy week for our relatively quiet fire station.

On Friday, the crew joined up with the team from Axminster to tackle a caravan on fire in Kilmington. Sadly, there was not much left of the caravan. Their quick intervention however prevented the fire from spreading to a near by caravan and the surrounding dry grass.

Immediately after this incident they were needed across the
border to Marshwood, where a bonfire had been left unattended.

Early this morning a worried member of the public walking their dogs at Morganhayes in Colyton called us out to deal with a fire in a woodland area.
After negotiating a padlocked gate, several dogs running loose on the track and a large branch blocking their way, they found an area of woodland on fire. This was dealt with by smothering the area with Compressed Air Foam.

This afternoon they were called to standby at Honiton Station due to the local crew being on another incident.
They were then called to a field on fire, which was dealt with using hose reel jets and beaters.
So all in all a busy couple of days!

We hope you are all enjoying the summer weather, 🌞 here at Colyton Fire Station we have seen a rise in our usual activities.
Over the last few weeks we have had several call outs to our local area and also been drafted to other parts of Devon and Somerset to support larger incidents.
The crew went to Axminster where a gas cylinder had become hot and started to vent gas out of a relief valve. The incident was quickly got under control by cooling the cylinder. Please remember to store gas cylinders outside and away from direct sunlight and don’t store more cylinders than you need.

On the same day the team spent several hours with crews from across the county at a barn fire containing approximately 400 large bales of hay.

A few days later they were called to Musbury where a bonfire became out of control affecting the surrounding area, this was dealt with using compressed air foam which smothers the fire, getting it under control quicker than water.

Yesterday they were first crew in attendance to a house fire in Newton Poppleford ( the more local crews were dealing with another incident in Exeter)
They were joined by crews from Middlemore and Axminster. The fire in the roof space of a garage was quickly got under control by using 4 breathing apparatus wearers tacking the fire with 2 hose reel jets.
Luckily the house had smoke alarms which alerted the occupant and she got out safely.

⚠️ Training Exercise Notification ⚠️

Please be aware that this evening from 18:30 - 20:00pm there will be a training exercise at St Andrews Church in Colyton.

Synthetic Smoke in that area is part of a realistic exercise scenario, please don’t be alarmed.

A great training opportunity within the community provides real life experience for our crews to hone on their basic firefighting and Breathing Apparatus skills.

Vicarage street will be partially blocked for this period, we apologise for any inconvenience. 🔥

Crews from Colyton were returning from an operational incident when they were alerted by Fire Control to immediately proceed to a vehicle fire. Heavy smoke was visible en route.
Once in attendance with Axminster the vehicle was confirmed well alight. The fire was affecting surrounding vehicles and property. Four Breathing Apparatus were quickly deployed due to the severity and immediately tasked with protecting the property whilst extinguishing the fire.

If you do suspect your car has fire, park and secure the vehicle in a safe place as soon as possible, get everyone out of the vehicle and dial 999.
