Coniston Mountain Rescue Team

The team is on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, we are all volunteers and funded only by public donations.

Coniston Mountain Rescue Team was founded in 1947 and was the first team of its kind in the UK. There are currently over 30 highly trained volunteers on the active list, turning out in all-weather 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and all funded solely by donations.

Incident 33 of 2026:
19/06/26, 12:58, Grizedale Forest east, SD343920

On a damp and blustery day, a mountain biker riding with his son fell from his bike on a forest track and sustained a painful shoulder injury. North West Ambulance Service called us out, and we despatched two Land Rovers to the forest.

The casualty was initially looked after by two passing ladies, and then driven down to the nearest car park by a Forestry vehicle from Grizedale Forest - Forestry England (thank you, all!) and we met him there. He was assessed while sitting in the vehicle and given strong pain relief before an ambulance arrived. He was then transferred to the paramedics’ care for onward transport to Furness General Hospital.

13 members attended this incident which took 3 hours.

This weekend some members of the team completed an Emergency First Aid course which was ran by Simon of Red-2 Medical.

Simon has been delivering courses for us over many years, working as a Specialist Paramedic 🚑 in the North West and as an urgent care medic overseas his expertise is second to none.

Hands on, practical training sessions such as these, based around real life events, make the learning engaging and impactful.

Thanks to Simon for another great weekend 😃

Incident 32 of 2026:
09/06/26, 20:33, Coniston Old Man, SD275980

The evening was dry with a moderate wind, when the North West Ambulance Service asked us to go to the aid of a lady who was descending Coniston Old Man with her family, and had slipped below the summit hurting her leg.

Two vehicles were deployed and due to the location, high above Low Water, Coastguard assistance was requested. On arrival a shelter was erected and after assessment, pain relief given. Her leg was then splinted.

Coastguard helicopter Rescue 336 from Caernarfon made several sweeps of the area but unfortunately had to abort due to local conditions. Thank you for trying! The casualty was therefore stretchered off the fell to the Land Rovers and taken to the Base. Her family drove her to Furness General Hospital.
13 members attended this incident which took just under 4 hours.

Incident 31 of 2026:
04/06/26, 23:22, Saddlestone Quarries, SD289980

The evening continued to be wet and windy as Cumbria Police tasked us with a second request for assistance of the day.

A vulnerable gentleman needed support and was located at Saddlestone Quarries. A small party went to his aid, gave him a hot drink and warm dry clothing, before accompanying him safely down.

At the Base he was made comfortable and then taken to FGH for assessment.

7 team members attended this incident which took 2 1/2 hrs.

Incident 30 of 2026:
04/06/26, 11:14, Grizedale Forest, SD336965

It was a very wet and blustery morning when Cumbria Police asked us to go to the aid of a lady who had come off her mountain bike in Grizedale Forest.

Two vehicles were deployed and one member went direct. Fortunately, we were able to drive on the forest tracks straight to her location. She was part of a group of cyclists who did well to protect her from the weather. We erected a shelter and extra warmth was provided whilst the lady was assessed. She had injured her neck, upper arm and shoulder and was given pain relief. The North West Ambulance Service arrived and we handed her over to them for her onward journey to Furness General Hospital.

Incident 29 of 2026:
26/05/26, 18:45, Colthouse Heights, SD362982

With admirable independence, a former servicemen was riding his electric wheelchair across Claife Heights on a hot day. His descent route, however, was unexpectedly rocky and he became stuck. Cumbria Police asked us to help, and we decided that the safest course was to stretcher him, uninjured, down to the road.

12 volunteer team members attended for 3 hours and 5 minutes.

Thanks also to the lovely staff Kings Arms Hawkshead for their offer of support with the gentleman when we got back to the village 👏🏼

📸 The photo is taken after our casualty was delivered to his accommodation – our new probationers Claire and Tom (both leaning on the Land Rover) appear to be enjoying life on the team!

Incident 28 of 2026:
25/05/26, 14:31, Old Man of Coniston, SD283981
Another sunny day in the Lakes, and a couple were descending the Old Man of Coniston when the man slipped near Stubthwaite Crag and briefly lost consciousness. North West Ambulance Service asked us to help. While we were en-route, a nurse who was passing, stopped to help him as he recovered. A trauma surgeon also stopped to assist a little later. Our thanks to both.

The casualty was assessed and appeared to have made a full recovery apart from some localised bruising. It was decided to assist him down the short distance to our vehicles. He was taken to base and an NWAS ambulance arrived shortly after. The paramedics assessed him and deemed him well enough to self present at their local hospital. His wife therefore drove him there.

15 volunteer team members attended, and the incident lasted for 2 hours and 34 minutes.

Incident 27 of 2026:
24/05/26, 15:17, Old Man of Coniston, SD274978
It was a warm, sunny day, and a family was descending the Old Man when one of them slipped near the top and fell, injuring both his legs and hence unable to walk. Cumbria Police called us to help, and we despatched 3 vehicles to Bursting Stone quarry, walking up from there.

On arrival at the casualty, he was assessed and one leg was splinted. We then carried him on our stretcher down to the quarry and our vehicles. He was then driven to our base, and went from there in a family car to hospital.

17 volunteer team members attended, and the incident lasted for 3 hours and 53 minutes.

Incident 26 of 2026:
23/05/26, 15:14, Claife Heights, SD387965
A sunny day after overnight rain, leaving forest paths wet and slippery. A woman slipped and injured her ankle, and North West Ambulance Service asked us to help stretcher her down to their land ambulance on the road beside Windermere lake. One of their paramedics is a also team member, so knew who to ask for. We provided additional pain relief, and delivered her to the ambulance.

13 volunteer team members attended, and the incident lasted for 3 hours.
