Penrhyn Bay, LL30 3HN
Tel (01492) 548873 Unfortunately, in 2011, the library was threatened with closure.

Established in 1971, Penrhyn Bay Library has a long history of providing a vital service to the local community. The building is a small one (91 square metres of customer floor space), but it has attracted a surprisingly high number of visits - just under 15,000 in the year 2011-12 (and over 27,000 issues)! It was saved only due to the strong opposition from the local community towards the propose

d closure. A public consultation took place in 2012. This further confirmed the need to retain the library as a source of books, information sharing and a community hub - with some significant changes and improvements! Namely, extended opening hours, improvements to the building and an increased range of facilities on offer. As things stand, the library is currently on track towards a pilot modernisation scheme. Provided that the proposed improvements are put in place, from 2013, it will be the first library in Wales to be run under the new community library model. A steering committee has been established, which has taken on the task of fundraising, co-ordinating volunteers and raising public awareness in order to secure a future for the library. A considerable amount of work has already been carried out to build a bridge between the community and council, but more still needs to be done! It is imperative that the public is aware of and continues to offer support for the library's cause in the coming months to ensure the continuation of the library.

What a marvellous idea

How would you like to grow into a tree after you die?

This is a Bios Urn, a completely biodegradable urn that contains a single tree seed. When planted, the tree seed is nourished by and absorbs the nutrients from the ashes. The urn itself is made from coconut shell and contains compacted peat and cellulose. The ashes are mixed with this, and the seed placed inside. You can even choose which type of tree you'd like to grow!

So which would you prefer; leaving behind a tree or a tombstone?

Although we have worked very hard to find the money to keep the beloved little Penrhyn Bay Library open we are struggling right now. We need £7000 a year for the general utility bills and upkeep. It doesn't sound like a lot but sadly too much to be raised with fundraising events. We need local business to support us with some revenue so if there is anyone out there who could support us with some financial support please let us know.
It looks like unless the 'Friends of Penrhyn Bay Community Library
can show that it has at least three years of revenue funding then we will not be able to take over the library building as we had hoped. Our plan is to find funding from local businesses and even though our plight has been publicised in the local newspapers on a regular basis over the last 18months nothing has come back.
We have many plans in place to use the library building as a small and thriving community centre but we are caught in a catch 22 situation. We do have Charity status and that is the good news.

If you are interested in helping the library function as a voluntary community centre with the library at it's heart, then get in touch or pop in and leave your name behind the desk and one of the committee will get in touch. If you have a good memory of your local library as a child then leave us a titbit of your story on here. If you are interested in helping out on the committee then get in touch just the same.

Hello friends we have now put some Standing Order Mandates in the library for those who want to become a financial supporter (A small quarterly fee) to the library on a regular basis. We believe this is the way forward as part of our ongoing preparations to take complete charge of the library building which needs updating. Our intention is to become a community centre with the library at the heart.
Sadly the opening hours are to be reduced by the library services to 15 a week in October.
