Last night at Mid Ulster Planning Committee, SDLP councillors voted against the Moyola Engineering application.

Cllr Malachy Quinn also spoke against the application, raising both planning concerns and a wider moral objection.

Moyola Engineering is involved in supply chains connected to Israeli military aircraft. At a time when civilians continue to be killed in Gaza, we do not believe public approval for additional capacity should be treated as business as usual.

Planning concerns were also raised around the lack of clarity on what the extension would be used for, and whether traffic, deliveries, servicing and HGV movements had been properly considered.

The application passed by 5 votes to 3, with 7 abstentions.

The DUP voted to approve the application.
The SDLP and Independents voted against.
Sinn Féin abstained.

The SDLP has a proud record of standing with the people of Gaza, supporting BDS, and opposing public support for supply chains connected to the Israeli military.

Public bodies cannot condemn what is happening in Gaza while treating supply chains connected to that violence as business as usual.

After 33 years as an elected representative, I have announced that I will not seek re-election at next year’s Assembly election.

It has been an honour to serve the people of Mid Ulster for more than three decades. I sincerely thank everyone who supported me, especially my wife Geraldine, family, friends, party colleagues, and those who have loyally voted for me in successive elections.

I am also grateful for the many kind messages and tributes from friends, constituents and colleagues across all parties since my announcement.

Thank you for your trust, friendship and support over the years. I will continue to serve as an MLA until next March and remain available to help and represent constituents during that time.

Tune into my deep dive podcast episode with Belfast Telegraph on all thing local politics. Specifically, discussing a New Ireland, keyhole surgery reforms that can make Stormont work, and the Westminster end of delivery.

Nice to have a sit down conversation, discussing rationale and hopes. A positive shift from our usual interview-debate format!
