We have a Mature Drivers event at Corby Fire Station on Friday 12th June.

Are you a mature driver (aged 60+)? Live in Northamptonshire? Rely on being able to drive? This FREE event is for you!

Driving is an important part of our everyday life and as part of Northamptonshire Safer Roads Alliance (NSRA) we are keen to help to keep mature drivers driving safer for longer.

It’s important that we recognise whether and how our driving ability is changing, especially as we get older, so we can stay safe and protect both ourselves and those around us.

This Mature Drivers event is aimed at drivers 60+ and will cover different aspects of driving with practical advice and safety information

There will be free hints and tips driving sessions available to book, delivered by Northampton Advanced Motorists.

Although FREE you must book a place at one of the sessions, either the morning session 10am - 12.30pm or afternoon 1-3pm.

There are also a limited number of spaces that have become available for Saturday 6th June in Northampton.

Book for all at Eventbrite: https://orlo.uk/nN2o8

There have been a number of tragic water-related incidents across the country this week. Our crews have been carrying out targeted visits to local lakes, rivers and open water sites, engaging with the public and sharing vital safety advice.
As the warmer weather continues, we want everyone to enjoy Northamptonshire's beautiful outdoor spaces safely – but open water can be far more dangerous than it looks.

⚠️ Know the risks:
• Water is often much colder than it appears, even on warm days.
• Cold water shock can affect anyone, no matter how fit or confident you are. Sudden immersion can trigger an involuntary gasp, rapid breathing and panic.
• Hidden hazards such as deep drop-offs, weeds, strong currents and submerged objects.
• Alcohol or drugs significantly increase risk-taking and reduce reaction times.

❄️ What happens during cold water shock? When you suddenly enter cold water:
• Your body can gasp uncontrollably – increasing the risk of inhaling water
• Breathing becomes rapid and difficult to control
• Panic can quickly set in, affecting your ability to swim

✅ What to do if you fall into cold water:
• Float to live: lean back, spread your arms and legs, and try to relax
• Control your breathing – the shock usually passes within a few minutes
• Once calm, call for help or swim to safety if you can

🛟 Stay safe by remembering:
• Stick to designated swimming areas
• Never enter the water alone
• Supervise children closely at all times
• Avoid swimming in open water after drinking alcohol
• Look for safety signage and lifesaving equipment

Our crews will continue to carry out these proactive visits to help keep our communities safe. If you see us out and about, please come and have a chat.
Let’s work together to prevent further tragedy.

If you see someone else in trouble: call 999 – ask for Fire & Rescue, and do not enter the water yourself.

Today (5/1/2026) our firefighters have been called to reports of people on the ice at both the lake at Boughton Road/ Lyveden Way and the Boating Lake on Cottingham Road, Corby.

Please keep off the ice and make sure children and pets do the same. What looks solid can break without warning, putting lives at risk. Also take care around slippery edges.

If someone falls into ice water:
❄️Call emergency services 999 immediately
❄️Use the "Shout, Reach, Throw, Don't Go" method from the shore: shout instructions, reach with a long object (pole, branch, clothing), throw something buoyant (ball, rope), and never go in yourself to avoid becoming a second victim.
❄️Once rescued, remove wet clothes, get them dry and warm quickly, and seek immediate medical attention as hypothermia sets in fast.

Behind every incident response is hours of drills and training. Last week, White Watch demonstrated exactly that by running intensive BA (Breathing Apparatus) drills for the apprentices while also supporting firefighters who are stepping up to become Level 1 Commanders in the new year. 👩‍🚒👨‍🚒

For our apprentices, this was about more than just procedures, it was about learning how to receive and interpret briefings, and applying those skills under pressure. For our future commanders, the focus was on leadership: developing command presence, mastering dynamic risk assessment, and building the confidence to make critical decisions.

These sessions were guided by our Station Commander, who ensured smooth handovers and led detailed debriefs, reinforcing the lessons learned.

Every drill helps us protect our communities and keep people safe.
