Another significant waste fire. Another reminder that waste, recycling and landfill incidents are no longer isolated events in the UK they are becoming a recurring operational challenge for fire and rescue services, site operators and local communities.

Why are waste and landfill-style fires becoming more frequent?
Because the fuel profile inside the UK waste stream has changed dramatically.

That is because water on its own can:
• run off the surface of compacted waste instead of penetrating to the seat of the fire
• struggle to reach heat buried deep within shredded or baled materials
• require very large volumes over extended periods
• leave hidden hotspots that later re-ignite
• offer little in terms of foam blanket stability on exposed combustible surfaces
