Industrial fire incidents such as the recent event in Querétaro are a timely reminder that fire protection performance is determined long before an emergency occurs.

Another significant waste fire. Another reminder that waste, recycling and landfill incidents are no longer isolated events in the UK they are becoming a recurring operational challenge for fire and rescue services, site operators and local communities.
Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the major fire at the waste recycling facility in Widnes, and with the firefighters and responding agencies working in extremely demanding conditions.
At 3FFF Limited, we believe it is important to speak plainly about what is driving this trend.
Why are waste and landfill-style fires becoming more frequent?
Because the fuel profile inside the UK waste stream has changed dramatically.
Today’s waste piles often contain:
• Hidden lithium-ion batteries from vapes, tools, e-bikes, toys and household electronics
• High volumes of dry, lightweight combustibles such as cardboard, paper, plastics and packaging
• Mixed and compacted waste loads that trap heat and create deep-seated fire pockets
• Shredded or processed material with increased surface area, allowing fire to spread faster
• Hot, dry weather conditions that accelerate ignition and fire development
Once ignition occurs, these fires are rarely simple “surface fires”. They often become deep-seated, stubborn and prone to re-ignition, especially where waste is densely packed, mechanically disturbed, or contaminated by damaged batteries and electricals.
That is exactly why 3FFF developed the SMARTFOAM / FREEFOR SF range around the realities of modern UK fire risk.
Why FREEFOR SF2 is relevant for waste, recycling and landfill fire response
FREEFOR SF2 is a fluorine-free, solvent-free wetting and foaming agent designed to improve water’s effectiveness on Class A / structural-style fire loads such as cardboard, paper, wood, plastics and mixed combustible waste.

1) Improved pe*******on into deep-seated waste
One of the biggest problems with water alone is surface runoff. Waste piles can shed water before it reaches the seat of the fire.
FREEFOR SF2 is designed as a wetting agent, reducing water’s surface tension so it can pe*****te deeper into porous, compacted and smouldering materials. That matters when you are trying to reach heat trapped inside baled cardboard, shredded waste, paper stock or mixed refuse.
2) Faster knockdown on visible surface fire
FREEFOR SF2 can also be used as a foaming agent, helping create a foam blanket over the fire load. On open waste faces and exposed combustible surfaces, that blanket can assist with:
• quicker surface knockdown
• cooling
• oxygen exclusion
• improved control during excavation and turn-over operations
3) Reduced re-ignition risk during prolonged incidents
Waste fires are notorious for re-igniting after apparent extinguishment. That is often because heat remains buried inside the pile even after large volumes of water have been applied.
By improving water delivery into the fuel bed and supporting better soak-in, FREEFOR SF2 can help crews and site operators attack the fire below the surface, not just above it a critical factor in reducing persistent hotspots and repeat flare-ups.
4) Better use of available water
Large waste fires consume huge volumes of water over long durations. Enhancing water efficiency is therefore operationally important.

That is because water on its own can:
• run off the surface of compacted waste instead of penetrating to the seat of the fire
• struggle to reach heat buried deep within shredded or baled materials
• require very large volumes over extended periods
• leave hidden hotspots that later re-ignite
• offer little in terms of foam blanket stability on exposed combustible surfaces
In short: modern waste fires demand more than volume they demand pe*******on, persistence and control.

We have come to the end of our time at Interschutz 2026 in Hannover, and it is appropriate for me to say a few words of thanks for an amazing fair for 3F.

Firstly, I would like to thank all those who have taken the time to visit our stand in Hall 13. Our customers, our new potential customers, distributors, suppliers, and even a number of our friendly competitors. I appreciate your warm words, consideration and support for the 3F range of foam concentrates, wetting agents, additives, and our FAS Fire Attack Systems.

I want to thank our 3F Americas team for making the trip to Europe for this fantastic event, and I really appreciate your dedication, hard work and the joy and laughter you have brought to the 3F stand. My thanks also to the whole team at TSF Sales and Services GmbH. Our success is due to our joint determination to bring innovative products to the German market. Together, we are making a difference.

I also want to say a huge thank you to the whole 3F team back home in Corby in the United Kingdom.
