LOCATION: Coastpath above Rotterdam Beach, Talland.

Looe Team were called to a report of a Casualty who had fallen on the coastpath with a possible ankle fracture. Eight members of Looe Coastguard responded, providing casualty care and stabilising the injured limb. She was then extracted by stretcher to the cafe to await an Ambulance.

Thanks to Smugglers Rest Cafe who provided us all with parking, shade, fluids and a safe place to care for the casualty.

Got a minute to refresh your self on the capabilities of HM Coastguard in your local area.

On-call 24/7, 365 in all weathers

The station is located on Marine Drive, Hannafore, overlooking Looe Island, where our blue light vehicle and equipment are packed and ready to respond to emergencies around the coast. We are a team of 12, with a vast mixture of skills and backgrounds. Experience in the team ranges from a few months to over 30 years!
There is no on-call allowance, we do receive payments close to minimum wage for incidents we attend and some training. We can be expected to be called out 24/7 365 by pager. And many of us live very close to station.

UK Coastguard (24 hrs) operations rooms positioned around the UK are responsible for the tasking and mobilisation of Search & Rescue (SAR) assets such as.... Coastguard Rescue Teams (CRT), RNLI lifeboats and Coastguard helicopters to people in danger and/or distress around the UK Coastline. It is the ops room staff that you speak to directly when you dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
As a team we respond to around 60+ incidents per year locally.

•Missing person search
•Time Expired Pyrotechnics/ordinance (TEP)
•Emergency Helicopter landing sites
•Casualty extraction
•Receiver of wreck
•Incident co-ordination
•Mutual aid to other agencies
Working together - Our flank teams are Tamar Coastguard Rescue Team and Polruan Coastguard. Tamar Coastguard team offers additional mud rescue capability.

In a coastal emergency always dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard or watercraft users VHF maritime radio channel 16.

We've been concentrating on rope training for the last couple of months since our new intake of CROs joined the team. The three newly qualified Rope Operators were able to use the skills and knowledge on two separate rope jobs yesterday.

The first at Millendreath, where a Casualty was successfully brought to safety having got himself into trouble near the coastpath overlooking the beach.

The second was on the Cliffs at Mount Edgecombe where a dog had sadly gone over the edge. Working alongside our flank team Tamar Coastguard Rescue Team.

Both positive outcomes and we're very proud of our new team members who all performed brilliantly on their first live rope job.

Inflatables are great for the pool, but they’re not safe for the sea.

Even in light winds, they can quickly drift you out to sea and put you in danger.

If you’re heading to the beach this bank holiday, leave inflatables at home and save them for the pool instead.

Taking a dip in the sea on a hot day? ⛱️

Don’t be fooled, just because it’s sunny doesn’t mean the water is warm.

Entering cold water, whether deliberately or accidentally, can cause cold water shock.

When this happens, you may gasp involuntarily, followed by rapid breathing that can be very difficult to control. This can increase the risk of inhaling water and drowning.

Never jump straight in. Instead, enter the water slowly to help your body adjust, and avoid swimming alone. Wearing a wetsuit can also help by improving buoyancy and reducing the effects of cold water.

Don’t forget to have warm clothes ready for when you come back to shore.

LOCATION: Hannafore Beach

TASKING: The team were called out to reports of a dog acting distressed and panicky with no owner in sight. With concerns that the owner might have got into trouble and require assistance, a member of the public called the Coastguard.

7 CROs from the Looe Team attended with the intention of commencing a search. However the dog, subsequently followed by the owner, were located before the need for any search was required and the team were stood down.

🗒Training🗒
We've been concentrating on our rope training for the past few weeks. As a Rope Team it's important to get our new colleaues confident and working together effectively as soon as we can and everyone's been absolutely outstanding!

It's not all ropes and helicopters!
Today the Looe Team were called out to a 'dolphin' stranding.

This was in fact a 2.25m (7ft) Tuna. Far too large to move. Sad to see, but great to know the species is thriving in the area. BDMLR also attended the incident.
