AUGUST ROUNDUP

It's been another busy month for the Looe Team with 8 callouts ranging from Rame to Lantic Bay, working alongside our flank teams Polruan Coastguard and Tamar Coastguard Rescue Team as well as our weekly voluntary training in Water Rescue, Rope Rescue and Lost and Missing Persons, and our monthly ORCs (Operational Readiness Checks). With one member of the team attaining his Rope Tech qualification, congratulations Steve Mitchell!

We have a saying in the Coastguard "If it's not raining, it's not training." So during this extended heatwave we thought we'd get wet anyway with Water Search & Rescue training.

JULY ROUNDUP

It's usually busy this time of year, but the team have packed in much more than usual this month!
We've had 6 Tasking as well as our weekly training in Water Rescue and Rope Rescue. The team have all been revalidated as CERCC practitioners (Coastguard Emergency Responder Casualty Care). Carried out our routine Operational Readiness Checks. As well as some fun stuff, attending the Fire Staton Open Day, taking part in the Floral Dance and bringing up the rear in the Looe Carnival procession. Its great to be part of the community 🥰

❤️ It's gestures like this that makes being a Coastguard Rescue Officer worthwhile.

Despite injury, pain and a road to recovery our casualty from a recent rescue sent us this card with a lovely message of thanks inside.

When our pagers sound we will drop whatever we are doing: work, family meals (especially the dishes), hobbies or even the cinema to get our kit on and make a difference to someone's bad day.

We love the area we live in and support and gestures like this one just make it all that better!!

🚨 Team Tasking #13🚨📟

Yesterday morning at 07:19 the team were tasked to support our flank team Looe Coastguard at an incident on Plaidy Beach.

The team responded in good numbers but were stood down whilst on route.

Think before you leap ⚠️

You don’t always know what you’re jumping into.

Tombstoning from piers, cliffs, rocks or other structures into the sea can be extremely dangerous.

The depth of the water can dramatically change with the tide, and what was a deep pool at lunchtime might be a shallow puddle by teatime.

Hidden hazards may be lurking beneath the surface, and you may not know they’re there until you’re hurt or worse.

Cold water shock may make it difficult to swim to safety, and strong currents can quickly sweep you away.

Whether you’re new to kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding, or heading out regularly, make sure you’re prepared before getting out on the water.

Before you go, check you have:

Personal flotation device – to help keep you afloat if you enter the water 🦺

Fully charged mobile phone – kept in a waterproof pouch so you can call for help 📱

Personal locator beacon – useful if you lose mobile signal 📍

Equipment labels – label your paddleboard, kayak and other watersports kit, so the Coastguard can check you’re safe if it’s found 🏷️
