SHARE Romania

SHARE Romania SHARE is a UK charity supporting Romanian children and young adults. ASCENSIUM was considered to be one of the top Non-Governmental organisations in Romania.

SHARE is a UK charity that has been providing funding, professional, educational, and moral support to the Romanian people for the past 20 years. It was set up by Steve and Mandy Hughes who, as a result of the opening up of Romania after the revolution in 1989 and the terrible conditions seen in the orphanages and institutions, were among the first volunteers to go to the country with humanitarian

aid. In 1994 a Romanian charity was established called ASCENSIUM and was funded by donations through SHARE. The Romanian charity was run by a small number of Romanians who were doctors, nurses, teachers, social workers, and support workers. In 2009, in light of the changes in Romania following the country’s entry into the European Union, the focus for our work changed. SHARE is supporting a range of projects in the poorest areas of Romania that are making a difference to the lives of hundreds of people.

Behind every smile, every new experience, and every moment of progress are the incredible volunteers who give their time, care, and compassion to support others 💙

From Speech and Language Therapists to Occupational Therapists to Nurses, our volunteers have helped create unforgettable memories through the Bianca Project - from trips to the park and swimming sessions to sensory play, laughter, and communication breakthroughs.

Their stories remind us that even the smallest moments can make the biggest difference.

Welcome to our newest trustee, Adina Jensen!

Adina has this year joined the board of trustees, but this is by no means her first encounter with our organisation. Adina in the daughter of founders Steve and Mandy, and lived her first 10 years in Romania. Adina essentially lived SHARE and then continued as a summer volunteer taking groups of children and young people to run holiday camps in rural underprivileged areas.

Now a mother and living in Austria, Adina went back to Romania for the first time in 10 years last summer to show her children where she grew up. After a very moving trip, Adina felt renewed energy and passion to use her skills in communications to help SHARE and continue to give to a cause and country that still resonates in her heart.

Volunteering is often about the moments you don’t expect - the growing confidence, the smiles, the connections, and the small breakthroughs that leave a lasting impact on everyone involved.

At SHARE, our volunteers play an important role in supporting children and communities through compassion, time, and care. Sometimes the smallest actions can make the biggest difference.

Thank you to all of our volunteers who continue to give their energy and support to help change lives 💙

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 International Day of Families 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Today, we celebrate the importance of family- not only the families we are born into, but the families we build through love, care, support, and community.

In collaboration with Love Light Romania, Jim’s House was created to give three young adults the opportunity to live not in an institution, but in a real home filled with compassion, independence, and belonging.

Through the support of carers, volunteers, and our wider community, Jim’s House has become more than just a place to live - it has become a home where everyday moments, shared meals, laughter, and life skills help create dignity, confidence, and hope for the future.

This International Day of Families, we celebrate every person who helps create safe, loving environments where people can thrive. 💙

This International Nurses Day, we thank and celebrate our volunteer nurses. Here Jane M L Williams reflects on her SHARE journey ❤️

“Thirty-two years ago this June I first went to Romania to work with an NGO that was set up to try and reduce the abandonment of babies. I have never lost my love and enthusiasm for the work and have been once, twice and sometimes three times a year (apart from in lockdown) since then.

As I look back to the start of my involvement in 1994, I see many positives from our work. It took time but the rate of baby abandonment at Sibiu maternity unit fell from 12 per month in 1994 to 1 or 2 a year today.

In schooling and in health care SHARE’s work has touched the lives of many thousands of people. The Bianca Project prepares Speranta’s disabled children to hold their own in the adult world, and whilst doing so it changes the lives of the volunteers – and who can say what they may go on to achieve.

Our three young people who live in Jims House, are living such a different life to the one which might have been in an adult institution”

We want to share with you some snippets from a volunteer reflection following their summer with the Bianca project:
“This summer has taught me so much about myself and enabled me to grow both as a Speech and Language Therapist and as an individual. Thank you for allowing me to be part of this amazing project I have truly fallen in love with Romania!
I have fallen in love with all the children at the centre. Each and every child I worked with had the ability to communicate. To have the opportunity to explore their potential and build upon their skills has been incredible. I cannot wait to return to Romania next year and continue to support these children and give them another great summer! Thankyou SHARE for this amazing experience I will never forget it.”
