SHARE Romania

SHARE Romania SHARE is a UK charity supporting Romanian children and young adults. ASCENSIUM was considered to be one of the top Non-Governmental organisations in Romania.

SHARE is a UK charity that has been providing funding, professional, educational, and moral support to the Romanian people for the past 20 years. It was set up by Steve and Mandy Hughes who, as a result of the opening up of Romania after the revolution in 1989 and the terrible conditions seen in the orphanages and institutions, were among the first volunteers to go to the country with humanitarian

aid. In 1994 a Romanian charity was established called ASCENSIUM and was funded by donations through SHARE. The Romanian charity was run by a small number of Romanians who were doctors, nurses, teachers, social workers, and support workers. In 2009, in light of the changes in Romania following the country’s entry into the European Union, the focus for our work changed. SHARE is supporting a range of projects in the poorest areas of Romania that are making a difference to the lives of hundreds of people.

Samantha Louise McNeilly, an occupational therapist, long-time volunteer with SHARE Charity, and the organisation’s current chair speaks with us about the International Day of Play and the impact of the Bianca Project in Romania.

Samantha says:
"The International Day of Play is held annually on 11th June Its purpose is to recognise and protect every child’s fundamental right to play. It’s a celebration of safe, inclusive play for all children, everywhere.

Since 2011, one of SHARE's main initiatives has been the Bianca Project. Through this project, we support newly qualified occupational therapists and speech and language therapists to volunteer in a centre for children with complex and multiple disabilities in Romania.

Our aim is to develop life skills through meaningful activity and participation. As an occupational therapist, this is core to our work- promoting independence, supporting choice, and enabling participation in everyday life.

For children, play is their most meaningful occupation. It’s a powerful way to build skills in an engaging, motivating, and joyful way. Whether learning to access the community safely, developing self-care skills like washing and dressing, or improving independence at mealtimes, play underpins it all.
That’s why the International Day of Play aligns so closely with the ethos of the Bianca Project- it reflects what we believe in every day."

Lindsay has volunteered with SHARE since 2013, becoming a trustee in 2014.

"Volunteering for SHARE has been such a huge part of my life. It has given me personally just as much as it has given the children. The children have a special place in my heart. They’ve shown me the power of the smallest things; the hope for the future, the joy that you feel when bringing happiness to others. That in life there should be no limitations and to advocate for some of the children who simply are unable to themselves."

Abigail Brazier has volunteered with SHARE for 10 years. Here, she reflects on her journey with us ✨

"Volunteering with SHARE has become a very important part of my life and career. Since my first visit to Romania in 2016, returning over the years has given me the privilege of seeing the children grow and develop, whilst also deepening my understanding of the challenges they face.

As a Speech and Language Therapist, the experience has pushed me out of my comfort zone, helping me to develop my clinical skills, adapt to difficult situations, and to find creative ways to support children and young adults with complex needs. Working in a different, at times very challenging environment, has broadened my perspective and strengthened my resilience.

The children’s progress (and their beautiful smiles!) are a constant source of inspiration, and I am proud to continue supporting a charity that makes such a lasting difference to their lives."

Welcome to our newest trustee, Adina Jensen!

Adina has this year joined the board of trustees, but this is by no means her first encounter with our organisation. Adina in the daughter of founders Steve and Mandy, and lived her first 10 years in Romania. Adina essentially lived SHARE and then continued as a summer volunteer taking groups of children and young people to run holiday camps in rural underprivileged areas.

Now a mother and living in Austria, Adina went back to Romania for the first time in 10 years last summer to show her children where she grew up. After a very moving trip, Adina felt renewed energy and passion to use her skills in communications to help SHARE and continue to give to a cause and country that still resonates in her heart.

Volunteering is often about the moments you don’t expect - the growing confidence, the smiles, the connections, and the small breakthroughs that leave a lasting impact on everyone involved.

At SHARE, our volunteers play an important role in supporting children and communities through compassion, time, and care. Sometimes the smallest actions can make the biggest difference.

Thank you to all of our volunteers who continue to give their energy and support to help change lives 💙
