The below letter has been sent to us by Cllr George Duggins and Cllr Linda Bigham, it has been sent to local residents also. They have asked we share the below, the friends group will be out supporting this fantastic news and programme from this Saturday.
Dear Resident,
We are writing to let you know about a number of improvements we are set to make at Longford Nature Park.
We have secured around £87,600 in Section 106 developer contributions from Pivot Power, which we will use to create better spaces for wildlife and help everyone to enjoy the park more easily.
What will the work look like?
In September, the Urban Rangers will restore the pond and create a shallow water area called a "scrape". This will create an area of open water that will help wildlife such as frogs, newts and dragonflies thrive.
The team will also do some work in the woodlands to create a healthier home for wildlife. This will help insects such as butterflies and allow more sunlight to reach the ground, helping plants and animals to grow.
A section of boardwalk will be built close to the existing metal footbridge to protect the ground and create a better habitat for wildlife. This new section will also help make the site more accessible, ensuring more people can enjoy our parks.
How long will the project take?
The project will be ongoing for the next five years. The initial work on the pond and trees will take place over September 2026. Improvements to access will be scheduled for next summer with ongoing monitoring and management of the site.
Access to the park
Most of the work will happen away from the main paths, so there will be very little disruption. If a path needs to be closed for a short time, clear signs will be put up and staff will be on hand to help visitors. Any temporary routes will be clearly marked.
Can I get involved?
We also want to encourage local people to get involved and learn more about the project. There will be volunteer days and events that everyone is welcome to attend. More information on this to follow.
