Coventry was chosen as the setting for the pounds 3,000 stone because city- built Armstrong Whitworth Whitley bombers were used extensively airborne troops during the Second World War. The stone was unveiled by the Lord Mayor of Coventry, Cllr Sheila Collins; Jim White, mayor of Aldershot, which is home to the airborne services; and Coventry-born general Sir Anthony Farrar-Hockley. The stone was t

he idea of Coventry ex-Para Lonnie Downes, , and Mick Murtagh from Coventry City Council, who formed the Coventry Pegasus Millennium Committee. They thought it would be fitting to have a memorial to the allied airborne troops who saw action during the D-Day landings and at Arnhem during the Second World War and more recently were in action in the Falklands and Sierra Leone.
