Since joining Severn Trent two years ago, Rafay has been building his career as a Mechanical Design Engineer in our wastewater Capital Design team working on projects that make a real difference for communities and the environment.

From technical design and collaboration across teams to getting out on site and tackling real world challenges, no two days are the same. It’s this variety, alongside the chance to take ownership and see ideas come to life, that really stands out for Rafay.

We caught up with him to talk about his journey so far, the projects he’s proud of, and how he’s helping shape the future of sustainable engineering at Severn Trent.

Applications for our Summer Work Experience 2026 are now open.

If you’re aged 14–18 and curious about what the world of work is really like, this is your chance to get hands-on experience across areas like engineering, data, finance, HR and more.

You’ll get involved in real projects, build confidence and develop key skills — all while exploring careers you might not have considered before. No experience needed, just curiosity and a willingness to learn.

Placements will take place across our sites in Coventry, Derbyshire and other locations across the wider Severn Trent region.

Placements are available 13–16 July or 20–23 July.

The sun was shining in Birmingham this weekend as we joined thousands of our customers, other businesses and colleagues at the Birmingham Pride parade 🏳‍🌈!

This year, we gave our tanker a revamp to reflect the communities we serve. Our Network Response Team proudly guided our tanker through the streets of Birmingham, covered with designs by a young designer from Coventry.

As part of our commitment to helping young people into work and get valuable experience for their future, Bea joined us on a work placement and set about designing our tanker for Pride which we think looks fab!

Having recently joined the Finance team at Severn Trent, Tayo has spent the past two years supporting our renewable team; the part of the business that transforms wastewater sludge into renewable energy and valuable by products. In their role, no two days are ever the same. The variety of work, the chance to partner with different teams, and the opportunity to make a real impact are all big parts of what keeps the role exciting.

Tayo helps drive performance through insight and supports stakeholders in making informed decisions. They’ve also embraced the many opportunities Severn Trent offers to grow and develop, from specialist finance programmes to practical, hands on learning across the business.

We sat down with Tayo to learn more about their journey, their role, and how Severn Trent has supported their development so far.
