REBECCA’S WELL

The current edition of the HP & NP Village News featured extracts from Mollie Rendell’s booklet regarding the community’s historical water supply. This interesting article serves as an introduction to the Wildlife & Habitats Group’s initiative to restore Rebecca’s Well, which is situated on Council property on a public footpath off Claycastle.

Although historically categorised as a well, the site is technically a spring that rises within Small Brook and feeds into a brick catchment area. Geologically, the spring emerges at the junction of impermeable Fullers Earth clay and water-retaining Bridport Sands. Positioned at a topographical low point near Small Brook, it serves as an exceptionally reliable water source that is not known to have ever run dry.

The historical designation as a "well" suggests the likely presence of a bucket mechanism for drawing water. The above sketch represents a conceptual reconstruction based on an analysis of the existing derelict structure. Furthermore, the project involves the excavation and restoration of stone steps leading from the footpath, which are currently submerged or overgrown.

The Wildlife Group welcomes contributions from anyone possessing relevant historical information or specialized skills that could assist in the restoration process.
