Hundreds of "stunningly beautiful" blue sea creatures have washed up along the coastline. They are called By the Wind Sailors (Velella) and yes, they do sting. However it is a relatively mild sting, unlike a Portuguese Man o' War (Physalia physalis) so don't worry too much about them. However any sting can cause an allergic reaction which is potentially more serious. It is probably advisable to warn children not to touch them and to seek medical attention if there is a severe reaction. NHS advice: see the link in the comments
