Crowborough Town Council now has a facebook and a twitter account in order to engage with as many Crowborough residents as possible, as well as the council website. It is intended to issue relevant and useful information to Crowborough residents and also to promote Crowborough Town Council events throughout the year.

Today, 14th October 2026, marks two important dates here in the County of Sussex :-

⚔️ 960th Anniversary of the Battle of Hastings
🐻 100th Anniversary of Winnie-the-Pooh

The Battle of Hastings took place on 14th October 1066, in what became Battle, Sussex, when King Harold II of England was defeated by William, Duke of Normandy, changing the course of English history. Harold Godwinson had strong connections to Bosham, Sussex, where it is thought he was born. His family owned a manor here. The famous Bayeux Tapestry depicts him feasting in what is thought to be Bosham Church before setting sail for Normandy.

Winnie-the-Pooh was first published on 14th October 1926, written by A. A. Milne and illustrated by E. H. Shepard, introducing the world to Pooh Bear and his friends. The stories were inspired in part by the landscape of Ashdown Forest in Sussex, where Milne lived, and walked with his son, Christopher Robin. Its heathland, woodland androlling hills became the inspiration for the ‘Hundred Acre Wood’, making Ashdown Forest a magical place for generations of Pooh fans to explore.

In 1966, the two notable anniversaries were celebrated. To commemorate the occasion, illustrator E. H.Shepard designed a book bag inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry. His imaginative artwork brought together English history and the much-loved characters of Winnie-the-Pooh, creating a charming link between the past and children’s literature.

🦌 As the deer rutting season begins, you might have noticed an increased level of movement as the deer make their way to their traditional rutting sites. They are most active around the morning and evening rush hour, meaning there is an increased risk of collisions with vehicles. However, deer movement can happen at any time of day, so caution is always needed.

Please drive carefully and anticipate that deer could appear at any moment. Be aware that more deer may be following behind... 🦌🦌🦌

In the unfortunate event that your vehicle hits a deer, here's what to do:

- If the deer is alive and either in the road or could go back onto the road, please call 999 and ask for the Police. Sussex Police co-ordinate the deer warden scheme, so by calling 999, the Police will despatch the closest warden.

- If the deer is alive but injured and unlikely to go back into the road, please call 101 and police will contact the closest deer warden.

- If the deer is dead but causing a road obstruction, also call 999.

- If the deer is dead but not in the carriageway, please contact Wealden District Council for collection: https://www.wealden.gov.uk/recycling-and-waste/dead-animals/

Movement of deer will increase over the next couple of months so please take care on the roads.

📣PROSPECTIVE COUNCILLOR INFORMATION EVENT

We currently have a vacancy for a councillor at Crowborough Town Council, to be filled by co-option.

Are you thinking about applying ? To help you decide, you're welcome to attend our Prospective Councillor Information Event on Tuesday 20th October, prior to the Communication and Events Committee meeting. People who are considering applying to become a councillor are welcome to come along to the council chamber at Pine Grove at 7pm to find out more and chat to councillors. You can then stay on for the meeting if you would like.

🌱Allotment Competition Winners
Each year, Crowborough Town Council invite their allotment tenants across all 3 council allotment sites, to enter an Allotment Competition.

This year's winners were invited to the Allotments & Cemeteries Committee Meeting at the end of September to receive their prize from the Mayor and the Best Kept Allotment winner, Adrian Grayson (pictured with his wife, Claire) had his name added to the Winners Board.

Crowborough Town Council is saddened that the town's War Memorial sustained serious damage following a vehicle collision last Friday.

The damage is significant and will require specialist repair. We are contacting contractors to arrange repairs as soon as possible, but the memorial is unlikely to be fully restored ahead of next month's remembrance events.

We would like to thank our grounds team who worked quickly over the weekend to clear the debris and make the area safe.

The Town Mayor, Councillor Natalie Whittle said, “Everyone in Crowborough has been deeply saddened by the damage to our War Memorial. We are a town that wears its heritage with pride, and our close, long-standing relationship with the armed forces means a great deal to us all. I went to the memorial this morning to inspect the damage and met several residents who were equally upset to see what has happened.”

🔴Remembrance Services Update
Fortunately, the impact was limited to the end pillar, leaving the area with the names of service people being remembered still visible so both upcoming remembrance services will proceed at the War Memorial as planned, with measures in place to ensure the area remains safe and clear:
• Remembrance Sunday (8th November): Service at 11:00am. (10.20am if you would like to join the Remembrance Parade).
• Armistice Day (11th November): Service from 10:45am.
