New Year Waste & Recycling: key info for Mid Devon residents 🎄♻️

During and after the festive period, crews are collecting much more than usual, so it’s really important to check your revised Christmas and New Year collection dates and put the right materials in the right containers. You can find your updated collection calendar here: https://www.middevon.gov.uk/residents/recycling-rubbish/check-collection-dates/christmas-and-new-year-collections/

Christmas tree collections 🎄
Real Christmas trees will be collected by the Garden Waste Service throughout January, up to and including 31 January 2026.
Trees must be under 6ft tall, with trunks no wider than around 4 inches (100mm); cutting them in half before putting them out really helps the crews. Please place your tree next to your blue food caddy or, if you have a brown garden bin, either inside it or next to it on your scheduled collection day.

What you can recycle ♻️
Please recycle as much as you can: wrapping paper (if non-foil), cardboard boxes, plastic tubs and trays, glass bottles and jars, and all your food waste in the caddy. Extra recycling can usually be presented in suitable containers alongside your normal boxes and bags, as long as it’s sorted correctly.

Need more containers or advice? 💬
If you need extra recycling containers, you can request them from Mid Devon District Council and they will be delivered to your home. For tips on how to recycle more as a household, residents can contact the recycling advisers by email at [email protected] or by calling 01884 255255 for in-person, phone or online advice.

Pots and pans now collected 🍳
Remember, unusable metal pots and pans are now part of the permanent kerbside recycling service in Mid Devon, following a successful trial.
These can be put out with your usual recycling on collection day, helping to keep even more metal out of landfill.

The latest Mid Devon District Council Residents' Survey is now open, so please do share your views about life in your local area (which means the area within a 15-20 minute walk from your home, or about 10 minutes by car if you’re in a rural spot).

Mid Devon District Council has made savings of over £5 million in the past decade, but like many councils, faces ongoing financial pressure due to the cost-of-living crisis, increasing government demands, and less funding overall. Despite this, MDDC continue to provide essential services that matter.

In the coming year, funding for councils across the country is expected to change dramatically, bringing a lot of uncertainty about what money will be available and how councils can plan ahead.

To give you a sense of scale, here’s where Mid Devon spends around £15 million each year:

£1.1m on recycling and waste collection

£0.6m on street cleaning

£0.1m on homeless accommodation

£0.9m on leisure services

£1.5m on planning, economic development, and enforcement

£0.7m on parks and open spaces

£1.0m on public health, safeguarding, and community safety

£7.0m on corporate services like HR, finance, legal, and customer services

£0.9m on revenues and benefits

£1.2m on property maintenance

£0.3m on climate resilience

(Note: These figures are after income from fees and charges.)

It’s also worth knowing that the council is not responsible for services such as highways, schools, social care, policing, hospitals, and some others, so please bear this in mind as you answer the survey.

Your feedback really matters to help us focus on the right priorities in these challenging times. Please take a few moments to complete the survey here:
