The latest Mid Devon District Council Residents' Survey is now open, so please do share your views about life in your local area (which means the area within a 15-20 minute walk from your home, or about 10 minutes by car if you’re in a rural spot).
Mid Devon District Council has made savings of over £5 million in the past decade, but like many councils, faces ongoing financial pressure due to the cost-of-living crisis, increasing government demands, and less funding overall. Despite this, MDDC continue to provide essential services that matter.
In the coming year, funding for councils across the country is expected to change dramatically, bringing a lot of uncertainty about what money will be available and how councils can plan ahead.
To give you a sense of scale, here’s where Mid Devon spends around £15 million each year:
£1.1m on recycling and waste collection
£0.6m on street cleaning
£0.1m on homeless accommodation
£0.9m on leisure services
£1.5m on planning, economic development, and enforcement
£0.7m on parks and open spaces
£1.0m on public health, safeguarding, and community safety
£7.0m on corporate services like HR, finance, legal, and customer services
£0.9m on revenues and benefits
£1.2m on property maintenance
£0.3m on climate resilience
(Note: These figures are after income from fees and charges.)
It’s also worth knowing that the council is not responsible for services such as highways, schools, social care, policing, hospitals, and some others, so please bear this in mind as you answer the survey.
