NORTH ROAD SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS

I mentioned on this page earlier this year that I am aware of safety concerns on North Road, Cumbernauld - directly adjacent to St Maurice's High School. I know that there have been a number of accidents here over the past few years and that there are concerns both over the speed cars travel on this stretch of road and the current inadequate traffic calming.

This is something I have taken forward on a number of occasions in the past with North Lanarkshire Council and I am aware that they have plans for road safety improvements on this stretch of road, which will include a signalised crossing adjacent to St Maurice's High School.

The council’s Transportation Engineering team have told me that they hoped that work would start on site this week but that due to workload capacity issues with their contractor work is now programmed for February, with the most traffic sensitive elements programmed during the mid-term break.

It has now been confirmed that the town centre rooftop car park and associated vehicle and pedestrian accesses will permanently close on Monday 2nd November. This includes the Tummel Way footbridge from next to the former Fleming House site and the bridge across St Mungo's Road from Fleming Road. The remaining crossing points for Central Way will be the bridge next to Kwik Fit, through the centre, and the underpass next to Asda.

McIntosh Way closure - 7th October

A road closure will be in effect for McIntosh Way, westbound only from Tesco to the Town Centre West Roundabout, on Wednesday 7th October. The road will be closed on this date from 9:15am until 4:30pm, when signposted.

This closure is to allow for land maintenance works to take place to the verge. A diversion will be in place via the Seafar Roundabout for the duration of the closure.

Allanfauld Road bus stop

While at the opening of the new play area yesterday morning, I noticed the steps at the Seafar Road bus stop were uneven and presented a trip hazard. I reported this to council officers yesterday and have received the following response today to confirm the steps will be repaired:

"Following review, I can confirm that repairs to these steps will be included within our Capital Footpath Improvements Programme. The works will address the uneven surfaces and improve pedestrian access and safety at this location. The site will be added to the programme of works and carried out as part of our planned footway improvement projects."
