WESTFIELD ROAD SURFACE

A number of constituents have recently asked me about the surface of the section of Westfield Road that runs in between both entrances to Westfield.

The road has recently had some work done to it but still looks unfinished as the surface is rough and has small stones on it, as well as warning signs of slip risk and advising drivers to stick to 20mph. I recently raised this with the council's Roads Department and received the following response:

"Thank you for your enquiry regarding the condition of Westfield Road between the two entrances to Westfield.

The road was recently treated using a maintenance technique known as surface dressing. This is a widely used preventative treatment designed to extend the life of the existing carriageway and improve skid resistance.

The process involves applying a layer of bitumen binder to the existing road surface, followed by the application of stone chippings. Traffic is then allowed to run over the surface for a period of time so that the chippings become firmly embedded within the binder. During this bedding-in period it is normal for some loose stone chips to remain on the road surface.

As a precaution, temporary 20mph advisory speed signs and skid risk warning signs are installed following the treatment. These measures help minimise the risk of damage from loose chippings and allow motorists to travel at a speed appropriate to the temporary surface conditions.

Once the surface has been sufficiently trafficked and the chippings have been embedded, the road will be swept to remove any excess loose material. Following this operation and a final inspection, the temporary advisory signs will be removed.

Surface dressing provides a number of benefits, including:

- Extending the service life of the existing road surface and delaying the need for more costly reconstruction works.
- Improving skid resistance, particularly in wet weather conditions.
- Sealing minor cracks and preventing the ingress of water into the road structure.
- Reducing future maintenance requirements and associated disruption to road users.
- Providing a cost-effective method of preserving the road network and maximising the value obtained from maintenance budgets.

While the appearance of a newly surface dressed road can initially seem unusual due to the loose chippings and temporary signage, these are normal characteristics of the process and the finished surface will provide a durable and safer carriageway once the treatment has fully bedded in."

Officers are appealing for information following a serious crash in Kilsyth.

The crash involving a cyclist and a white van, happened on Takmadoon Road near to Berryhill Farm, Kilsyth, between 7.30pm and 8pm on Wednesday, 12 August, 2026.

The van left the scene and the 60-year-old male cyclist was taken to hospital for treatment to what were described as serious injuries.

Sergeant Gary Stewart of Police Scotland Road policing unit said ‘’Our enquires are ongoing to trace the van involved and establish the full circumstances of this crash and we are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed what happened to contact us.

“I would also ask anyone who was in the area around the time and who may have dash cam footage that could assist to get in touch.

‘’In particular I would like to speak with a man and woman who were within a blue saloon vehicle that stopped to assist.”
