Guinness finishing up the last flight of the day!

Did you know that Corvids, including the African Pied Crow, have incredible memories and are actually known to cache food in certain spots to come back and collect later?

Corvids can hide their food using materials such as twigs, leaves, moss or bark for example, and visually memorise the area surrounding this spot! When they come back for the food later, they will track down the familiar surroundings to get to their cache!

Guinness always knows where his stash is … right in our glove! 🀷

The Bateleur Eagle is unique as it possesses a tail which is only a few cm long! This is unusual as tails are used to help steer and break when flying, so a short tail could be seen as a disadvantage. It is thought that Bateleur’s has evolved a short tail to aid them with low altitude soaring, over long distances. A short tail also has other benefits when on the ground. A short tail is kept out of the way when hunting on foot or scavenging off a carcass, resulting in the bird being more mobile. Additionally, the Bateleur does not have to raise its tail and lower its head to protect feathers ensuring that the head can stay upright allowing them a clear view of any potential threats.

Here is Zulu exploring on the ground!

Meet the Bird Monday

Meet Google our male Snowy Owl (bubo scandiacus). Google is 15 years old Snowy Owl that was hand reared by staff from 2 weeks old. When Google was an owlet, we held a naming competition and Google was randomly selected due to his large eyes when he was a chick.

Google is a bold, reliable and competent flier and always puts in 100%. Google takes part in both flight demonstrations and experiences but always gets the summer months off due to the rising temperatures. In the springtime, Google gets a lot more vocal and can often be seen displaying and calling to staff and customers alike!

Due to his dense and waterproof feathers, he excels in the colder weather and is in his element when we have snow and ice. His incredibly fluffy feet help keep his feet warm and the dense layering of feather keep water out and heat in.

Not known for his patience, Google likes to do everything his way, and he can be stubborn if expected to do otherwise. Google performs high speed glides over great distances and mid air catches with ease and is always a professional when flying.

In the colder months, Google takes part in our β€˜An Evening with Owls’ events and looks spectacular flying in the dark with the field up lit. Come see Google and his friends yourself on our first date of the year (1st of November), don’t hesitate as its booking out quickly.

Is Google your favourite bird at the centre? We would love for you to share any memories or photos/videos of our stunning boy below!

Have you ever seen an owl doing a bit of a wriggle movement like Grimm here?

This may look humorous, like the owl is almost dancing. However during this action, the owl is actively listening for disturbances in the environment, especially if there’s prey nearby.

When moving its head, the owl can judge the distance or positioning from its prey, triangulating any sounds they can hear to locate the exact area from where the sound came from!

Grimm, our Great-Horned Owl, displays this often, showing how active her hearing is while out flying!

Nevis our Golden Eagle waiting on his turn to get weighed in the morning!

Our flying team are weighed each morning which is an important part of their health care routine. Daily weighing provides real data to be logged about how a bird is doing and ensures daily visual health checks first thing in the morning. Birds of prey are very good at hiding illness, so recording their weight daily is just one of the routines that help detect any health issues the bird might be experiencing. A bird’s weight will also make it easier to predict how they well they might fly, helps manage their progress during training and helps us predict how much and what type of food we might feed on a day.
