The Mayor’s Civic Engagements – August & September

Mayor Cllr Bruce Solari has been out and about representing Dalton with Newton Town Council at a number of civic and community events over August and September.

Barrow Town Council Civic Sunday
Bruce attended Barrow Town Council’s Civic Sunday, joining civic leaders and representatives from across Westmorland and Furness. It was a lovely opportunity to meet fellow Mayors and local representatives.

Staveley House Summer Fair
Bruce attended the Staveley House Summer Fair, where he had the pleasure of meeting the founders, Mr and Mrs Staveley. It was a wonderful community event and a great opportunity to meet those involved with Staveley House and enjoy the fantastic atmosphere.

Furness Abbey Medieval Fair
Bruce and his wife Sharon also enjoyed a visit to the Medieval Fair at Furness Abbey, taking in the sights, sounds and atmosphere of this popular local event.

Bruce looks forward to continuing to get out and about throughout his Mayoral year, supporting local organisations, attending community events and representing the people of Dalton and Newton.

📢 Polling Districts & Polling Places Review

Westmorland and Furness Council is carrying out a review of the Polling Districts, Polling Places and Polling Stations used across the area.

As part of the review, residents and electors are being invited to share their views on the current arrangements, including whether polling stations are suitable and accessible, and whether any alternative locations should be considered.

The consultation opens today, 7 September 2026, and closes on 5 October 2026.

If you have any comments or suggestions about polling arrangements in the Dalton area, you can take part in the consultation here:

💜 MAYOR’S CHARITY EVENT – SATURDAY 19TH SEPTEMBER 💜

Come along and support Mayor Cllr Bruce Solari at his Charity Event on Saturday 19th September, 9.30am–11.30am at Dalton Community Church.

This year, the Mayor has chosen to support two fantastic charities: CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) and Andy’s Man Club. ❤️

There’ll be plenty to enjoy, including delicious homemade cakes, fresh coffee, refreshments and a variety of craft stalls — all while supporting some very worthwhile causes.

🌿 Dalton with Newton Town Council will also have a stall!
We’ll be showcasing a range of our eco-friendly, handmade and recycled products, with all proceeds from our stall going directly towards the Mayor’s chosen charities.

So come along, have a cuppa, enjoy some cake, browse the stalls and help us raise as much as possible for these two brilliant charities. 💜

Families urged to check Free School Meal eligibility as support expands.

National eligibility changes have been made to Free School Meals and we are urging our Westmorland and Furness families to check whether they are eligible for Free School Meals (FSM). From September 2026 all households receiving Universal Credit can apply, regardless of income. Families must still apply, as eligibility is not awarded automatically.

The changes remove the previous earnings threshold for Universal Credit claimants, meaning more working families who receive Universal Credit top-up payments may now qualify for support.

Councillor Janet Battye, Westmorland and Furness Council Cabinet Member for Children's Services, said:

"We want to ensure that every family who is entitled to support receives it. The expansion of Free School Meal eligibility means that many more families, including those who are working and receiving Universal Credit, may now qualify. I encourage anyone who thinks they may be eligible to check and apply. Registering for Free School Meals not only helps families with the cost of school meals but can also unlock additional support and funding for schools. You can also pop into any of our Family Hubs and ask for help and information from our friendly teams."

Applications can be made online through the Westmorland and Furness Council website and typically take only a few minutes to complete.

🌿 Be Well at Dalton Community Centre! 🌿

It’s a lovely day at the BeWell event, which is happening right now at Dalton Community Centre! 💚

There are lots of free activities and things to get involved with, so why not pop along and see what’s on offer? There’s a great atmosphere and plenty happening throughout the day. 😊

We’re pleased to have Dalton Town Council members in attendance, with Deputy Mayor Cllr Neil McDougall and Cllr Wendy Maddox busy handing out goodie bags, alongside W&F Cllr Tony Callister.

And there’s even been a special celebrity encounter… 🐦😂 Cllr McDougall and Cllr Maddox got to meet Tommy the Pigeon! 🐦❤️

🐦 TOMMY IS GETTING READY! 👀

Our final Tommy spotting before the big day sees him at Dalton Community Centre, making sure everything is ready for tomorrow!

He’s even been checking the car park to make sure everyone has moved their cars in preparation for tomorrow’s activities. 🚗🐦

Tommy is really looking forward to seeing lots of you tomorrow!

The weather isn’t looking too kind, so don’t forget your brolly — but don’t worry, there’s lots to do inside the hall, including:
