Strong oral language skills help children feel confident, connected and ready to learn. This guide explores simple, everyday ways that parents, carers and educators can support children’s speaking, listening and understanding, from shared conversations and story time to naming feelings and building vocabulary through play and routines.

It also highlights the value of working closely with nurseries, schools and early years settings, using evidence-based approaches and spotting possible language needs early. With expert insight from OxEd, the guide offers supportive advice to help children become confident communicators as they prepare for school.

Little Learners have had lots of fun exploring some lovely beach treasures that some of the children kindly shared with them. The children have enjoyed handling a variety of shells, pebbles and sea w**d. They added some soft dry sand for scooping and feeling with hands and fingers. A lovely sensory and physical activity along with opportunity to hear and use new words.
The children also had fun in the water outside exploring the beach rocks and pebbles. Lots of physical skills as the children balanced and transported them using spoons, placed them into different sized metal containers and filled and emptied with jugs. Some children also added the sea creatures into their play. Lots of early maths learning too through counting, exploring size, quantities and weight.

On Wednesday, Sarah from the Dolphin Centre came into school to talk to the year five and six children about the Water Safety Code.
Stop and think,
Stay together,
Float to survive,
Call 999 (Do not enter the water yourself)
Sarah also talked about riptides and how even though the water can seem calm, this can be misleading and dangerous.
