🏛️ LABOUR’S CASE FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT REORGANISATION — DOES IT REALLY ADD UP?
Now that the Labour Government has finally revealed its preferred plan for reorganising Kent’s councils, we have taken a closer look at the arguments being used by Dartford Labour to justify it.
Frankly, they are not very convincing.
1️⃣ “You’ll get more for your Council Tax”
Reorganisation will not magically create new services. It simply changes which authority delivers them.
What it will do is divert millions of pounds into restructuring, redundancies, new systems and expensive consultants.
The new authority will also be required to equalise Council Tax across its area within seven years. As Gravesham residents currently pay more than Dartford residents, that could mean sharp increases for Dartford households.
2️⃣ “All services will be united under one roof”
What Labour does not mention is that the roof could be 14 miles away in Chatham.
Medway has been positioning itself so that any new authority would be difficult to base anywhere other than its existing headquarters. That could mean jobs, investment and decision-making being moved away from Dartford.
It could also mean the continuation of the same senior management structures that oversaw Medway’s substantial debts and the services about which many Medway residents regularly complain.
3️⃣ “Democracy will be brought closer to residents”
Half of Dartford’s services may move four miles closer — but the other half could move 14 miles further away.
The likely result is a larger, more remote authority with which many Dartford residents will struggle to identify.
4️⃣ “There will be fewer politicians and greater accountability”
Some communities currently represented by eight councillors could be reduced to just three.
This will happen during an enormous and complicated transformation of public services, when problems are almost inevitable.
Even the most dedicated councillors will struggle to manage such a dramatic increase in workload. Residents who already find it difficult to get help may find it even harder.
5️⃣ “Local identities and communities will be protected”
That has certainly not been the experience so far.
Residents have been denied a meaningful say, calls for a referendum have been ignored, and more than 130 years of Kent’s established local government identity is being swept aside.
🐘 And then there is the elephant in the room…
Medway’s reported £612 million debt.
Debt per resident in Medway is around three times the level in Dartford. Dartford residents could therefore be expected not only to fund the costs of reorganisation, but also to share responsibility for a heavily indebted Medway authority.
Labour has chosen Option 4B for Kent.
It may be better than the disastrous Option 4D, but it still represents a deeply damaging outcome for Dartford.
Higher Council Tax. Fewer councillors. Jobs and decision-making moved away. Greater pressure on services. And Medway’s debt hanging over the new authority.
