Daventry Library is celebrating this landmark month by looking back at the foundation of our legal system.

The Birth of Rights

On 15 June 1215, England's powerful elite, the Barons, marched on London, cornered King John (the infamous villain from the Robin Hood stories), and forced him to attach his royal wax seal to a document that stripped him of absolute power.

That document was the Magna Carta (the "Great Charter").

While it only protected wealthy barons at the time, a few of its 63 clauses changed the course of human history forever. By declaring that no one is above the law, it paved the way for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the contemporary legal systems we rely on worldwide today.
