Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service Fire control Red Watch, received a call reporting smoke issuing from a storage shed containing woodchip for a Biomass boiler system.

Control mobilised Dawlish and Teignmouth to attend.

Once on scene crews were met with a smoke plume coming from a shed that contained over 30Tonnes of woodchip.
Onsite staff had confirmed that the boilers had been shut down.

Crews set out Firefighting media whilst liaising with onsite staff to ascertain the best method of attack.

2 Breathing Apparatus wearers were committed to the storage shed to try and locate an auger system where the fire was believed to have tracked through.

At this point the incident commander requested an additional appliance attend which came from Middlemoor.

Following the information from the Breathing Apparatus crews that had been committed the decision was made to utilise onsite staff and a digger to dig out the Woodchip to try and locate the source of combustion.

At this point the request was sent to control for a water Bowser appliance which was mobilised from Danes Castle.

Over the next few hours our crews supported onsite staff with digging out and damping down the woodchip.

Following an on-scene assessment and debrief the incident was scaled back around 23:00 hours.

However, our crews returned to scene at 23:45 hours as some deep seated hotspots had flared up again.

Crews this time used a Compressed Air Foam lance to pe*****te into the deep seated pockets of fire, as well as again using onsite staff and their digger to dig out the surrounding areas.

Our colleagues from Teignmouth returned this morning at 08:00 hours to carry out a scheduled revisit of site due to our crews being mobilised elsewhere for another incident.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service Fire Control Blue Watch received a call from an alarm receiving centre reporting the alarms sounding at a property in Dawlish.

Dawlish were mobilised to attend, however whilst crews were about to book mobile to the incident the alarm receiving centre confirm this was a false alarm due to a system test. Our crew as a result were stood down.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service Fire Control Blue Watch took a call from the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust with reports of a 2 Vehicle Road Traffic Collision with all persons free and clear but reports of 1 vehicle smoking.

Our crew was mobilised to investigate.

Once on scene crews confirmed a 2 vehicle Road traffic collision with no persons trapped and no vehicles smoking. Ambulance were already on scene assessing the people involved and our crew set about lending assistance to the Ambulance whilst making the vehicles safe.

Following a handover with Devon & Cornwall Police and Ambulance our crews left the scene.

Due to a large incident on the Devon-Somerset border fire control mobilised our crew to provide standby duties at Honiton Fire Station, fortunately though our crews were returned to station after reached the top of Holcombe Down Hill.

Not long after returning home from the previous standby incident our crew was re-alerted, this time for standby duties at Cullompton Fire Station, this was due to a large number or incidents within that area as well as into Somerset, resulting in depleted fire cover.

Our crews eventually returned home station just after 19:00 this evening.

Our crews have not long returned from a 7 hour stint out on the appliance, initially being mobilised to Standby duties at Danes Castle Fire Station - Exeter, whilst en-route a ‘Make Pumps 12’ assistance message was sent which is when we were attached to this incident, with a very large smoke plume visible from Exminster.

Fire control received a call from partner agencies reporting a 2 vehicle Road Traffic Collision involving a car a double decker bus.

Control mobilised Dawlish, Middlemoor and the heavy Rescue Unit from Middlemoor to attend.

Our crew arrived on scene and thankfully very quickly ascertained that there were no persons trapped within the bus or the car.

Crews quickly isolated the car that was involved as it was still running and were shortly joined on scene by Devon & Cornwall Police.

Following a quick handover the scene was left with the Police

Around 14:00, due to an ongoing incident in the Broadsands area snd diminished fire cover, our crew were mobilised to provide standby duties at Torquay Fire Station, fortunately after a couple of hours our crews were able to return to Dawlish.

As our crew were reversing the appliance back onto station the system re-sounded, this time our crew was mobilised to Standby Duties at Danes Castle Fire Station - Exeter, this was because a vehicle fire in a field of crop that had unfortunately spread to the crop, whilst at Danes Castle our crews were also further mobilised to an Alarm Residential incident, fortunately though in this instance our crews discovered it was a system fault. Following conclusion of this our crews returned home station at 19:00

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service Fire control Green Watch, received a call from a member of the public reporting smoke in their property with fire visible in a stud wall of their property.

Control mobilised Dawlish and Teignmouth to attend alongside a supporting officer.

Once our crew arrived on scene the home-owner advised they’d had already started to extinguish the fire using a hose-pipe from the garden through an open window.

Our crew isolated the gas and committed to the property using Small Tools, a hose reel jet and a thermal imaging camera to investigate and extinguish the remaining fire.

Whilst our crews started stripping back the plasterboard our colleagues from Teignmouth arrived, and it was decided that their crew would check the upper and lower floors for any signs of fire spread, as well as checking the external temperature with use of another Thermal Imaging Camera.

Once crews had revealed a further section of stud wall it was discovered that fortunately, through the home owners swift action, the fire had been prevented from spreading further.

Following a handover with the occupant and fitting some smoke detection in the property, all crews left the scene.

The cause of the fire was deemed accidental.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, White watch Fire Control received a call from a member of the public who could see smoke rising from a woodland in the area of Windward Lane.

Control immediately mobilised Dawlish to attend.

Once in attendance at where the incident was plotted crews set out on foot to try and locate the source of smoke.
Initially our crews were having difficulty in finding the source, so made contact again with the caller who provided some further information.

Following this our crews soon located a small controlled fire within a metal fire pit in someones garden that was under supervision with means of extinguishing the fire.

Fortunately this was a false alarm with good intent and our crews soon returned to station.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service Red Watch Fire control received a number of calls reporting a fire involving a hedgerow and spreading through undergrowth in Dawlish.
Control immediately mobilised Dawlish to attend.

Once on scene crews confirmed a large fire involving hedgerow, grassland, a small amount of timber decking and a gas bottle, and immediately got to work using a Hose Reel Jet to extinguish the fire.

Due to the presence of a gas bottle with unknown contents crews set up an improvised ground monitor to keep water on the cylinder to try and extinguish the flames and cool it.

Further information from the reporting people on scene confirmed the cylinder had already vented off prior to our attendance.

Crews continued to extinguish the fire involving grassland and the hedgerow that was at the top of a cliff that led to houses below.

Fortunately the fire was quickly under control and our crews focus switched to damping down the area whilst continually monitoring the Gas Bottle.

Once the fire involving the gas bottle was extinguished crews continued to cool the bottle to an acceptable temperature.

After extinguishing the gas bottle it was discovered to have been Propane Gas.

A small amount of damage was noted to some overhead cables that had been directly affected by fire so our crews arranged for National Grid, as well as Openreach to attend site.

Once crews were satisfied the fire was extinguished an extensive handover was filled out for the person responsible for the land.

This incident was caused by an unattended controlled Burn that spread due to the extremely dry conditions we are having at the moment.
We would like to remind people around the dangers of having Fires in the current weather we have experienced and would advise strongly against having a bonfire as a result of the ground conditions.
