Kent Deserves Democracy Kent Deserves Democracy is a campaign group for fair voting at parliamentary & local level. Email: [email protected]

Fair means regulations should prevent groups with deepest pockets buying elections; fair means proportional elections. We have links with the national campaign groups Make Votes Matter, Get PR Done and Councils for PR, and like them we are a cross party / no party campaign group. We believe that with fair proportional voting and the genuine multi-party system that it brings, 1.5 million residents

of Kent will a enjoy much greater chance of holding to account those who are elected to office, and thus there will be a greater opportunity to vote out MPs or councillors who are found to be working for lobbyists instead of the electorate. MVM and GPRD are both signatories of the Good Systems Agreement and we support their position.

3 of the 4 UK nations have assemblies elected by PR but England's regions sadly do not. Good proportional systems are ones which keep a constituency link; it is a lie that PR means watering down the link between representative and constituency. In Scotland the AMS system allows voters to have a constituency representative and a representative from a list, according to the proportion of votes cast for each party. AV, considered in 2011, was not a proportional system. Canterbury Progressives also has a link with Make Votes Matter and we hope to work with this group.

The MPs say the current first-past-the-post system for general elections is "broken".

Scotland has just done something that now feels almost radical in UK politics: it produced an election result that actually reflects how people voted. This isn’t via an accident; it ha

The British public has moved on from the old way of doing politics. Now it’s time for our voting system to catch up.

Our political views are diverse. That's a good thing.

In a healthy democracy, decisions are made through dialogue, not dominance. This isn't just a fairer way of doing politics. It leads to better policies, too.

Meanwhile, Britain's First Past the Post voting system limits our options and shuts many voices out. It concentrates power in the hands of the few, leaving millions unrepresented.

No one party speaks for the whole country, and our opinions cannot be reduced to a choice between two options.

It's time for a voting system that recognises this.

Local Government Reorganisation – last chance to have your say!

The government has decided on big changes to how councils work across Kent and Medway. The short ‘consultation’
closes at 23:59 this Thursday. Central government promises to tell us what they’ve decided in July.

Link to consultation: https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/local-government-reorganisation-in-kent-and-medway

What is local government reorganisation?

Right now, most of Kent has two layers of councils:

• Kent County Council – roads, schools, social care, libraries, public health
• District councils – planning, waste, housing, licensing

Medway is already a unitary authority, meaning it already delivers all local services itself.

The government is consulting on proposals to:

• Replace the county + district system with 1 or more likely 3 or 4 new unitary councils, each covering over half a million people and
• Parish and town councils will NOT be abolished under these proposals.

First Past the Post can no longer deliver real mandates - only chaos. 60% of Brits want it scrapped. Yet the new Representation of the People Bill won’t even touch our rotten voting system, which leaves millions unrepresented. We need to fight back. Call on the Government to act now for fair votes...
