Kent Deserves Democracy Kent Deserves Democracy is a campaign group for fair voting at parliamentary & local level. Email: [email protected]

Fair means regulations should prevent groups with deepest pockets buying elections; fair means proportional elections. We have links with the national campaign groups Make Votes Matter, Get PR Done and Councils for PR, and like them we are a cross party / no party campaign group. We believe that with fair proportional voting and the genuine multi-party system that it brings, 1.5 million residents

of Kent will a enjoy much greater chance of holding to account those who are elected to office, and thus there will be a greater opportunity to vote out MPs or councillors who are found to be working for lobbyists instead of the electorate. MVM and GPRD are both signatories of the Good Systems Agreement and we support their position.

3 of the 4 UK nations have assemblies elected by PR but England's regions sadly do not. Good proportional systems are ones which keep a constituency link; it is a lie that PR means watering down the link between representative and constituency. In Scotland the AMS system allows voters to have a constituency representative and a representative from a list, according to the proportion of votes cast for each party. AV, considered in 2011, was not a proportional system. Canterbury Progressives also has a link with Make Votes Matter and we hope to work with this group.

So two far-right parties are battling it out for their first seat on Dover District Council. The Reform candidate James who voted 2026 for high KCC councillor allowances to be increased (so he’s on the basic £16K pa + an extra £9K responsability allowance) bleated on in July that a mere £6K additional councillor allowance IF elected also to DDC was hardly worth his while. Reform leader Farage was humiliatingly immediately referred back to Parliamentary Standards for a £5million donation within hours of winning back his seat this month. And for information on dodgy funding of the Restore Britain party see this from Byline Times. https://bylinetimes.com/2026/07/10/who-is-really-bankrolling-rupert-lowes-restore-britain/ Jez (not James) is the Restore candidate in Dover by-election. He is surprised when ex armed service residents tell him they wouldn’t touch either Trumpian far-right party with a barge-pole.

Many residents think plague on both R&R houses & prefer to vote for the moderate Green Party candidate Dr Dodd who they remember as their local doctor GP before she retired. Mr Hawkes is the Conservative candidate, Mr Wisbey is the Labour candidate. In May 2023 Green candidate came 2nd to Conservative winners in this well-heeled rural ward.

Big news - it looks like we have a new Democracy Minister. Congratulations to Florence Eshalomi MP!

She’ll soon face a crucial decision: whether to make the Representation of the People Bill truly transformative for our democracy.

The Bill will return to Parliament in September, but it fails to tackle some of the biggest problems we face. That includes fixing our broken voting system and stemming the eye-watering sums of money flowing into our political parties.

We’re asking the new Democracy Minister to make this Bill more ambitious. Will you support our letter?
