Originally designed as part of a chain of coastal artillery defenses it evolved into the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. Through this role, past residents have included The Duke of Wellington, William Pitt the Younger, Sir Winston Churchill, and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. The Castle allows you the chance to explore the rooms, including that where the D

uke of Wellington died. Outside you can explore the stunning gardens including the famous Broadwalk, the kitchen garden, the Queen Mother's Garden, and the woodland walk. The castle has recently been reimagined with new look interiors, previously untold stories and displays. There's now even more reason to come and see us! Posts by Harry and the site team. HOUSE RULES

To protect our froglets and toadlets we have decided to close off the lawn around the pond in the Queen Mother's garden. This will only be until they have exited the pond and are no longer hopping through the grass.

Another glorious morning in the garden.

If you're looking for somewhere to cool off today then there are lots of places to sit and walk in the shade in the gardens and woodland.

We are open 10-5 daily.

Right now, an amazing natural event is happening at our pond: hundreds of tiny froglets and toadlets are finally leaving the water and making their way into the big wide world!

To help them on their journey, we’ve built special little exit ramps. Unfortunately, we’ve noticed some incredibly heartbreaking behaviour over the last few days. People have been destroying the ramps, throwing the babies back into the water (which can harm them), and worse, intentionally hurting these fragile little creatures. If you notice any of this behaviour then please notify a member of staff.

Please help us look after our site's inhabitants and do not touch, harm, or disturb the wildlife.

We have lift off! The first orchids are just starting to peer through the meadow in the gardens.

If you are visiting over the next month then do make sure to have a look!

We have Common Spotted Orchids, Pyramidal Orchids and even Bee Orchids in our meadow. A couple of years ago a Lizard Orchid was spotted on our beach too.

If you are going through the meadow then please help us protect this diverse habitat by staying on the mown paths.

Wildlife Wednesday

Temperatures have risen in the gardens and more butterflies are appearing. The Wall Brown butterflies love to sun themselves on the warm moat walls and feed on the sweet nectar of the flowers growing there. If you go down to the moat you might see these fluttering orange-brown beauties.

Join us on Thursday 28th May at 11:30 for a gentle guided walk; hopefully you will see some butterflies in the gardens or moat.

Please come early to secure your wristband place, as spaces are limited. Wristbands can be collected from admissions on the day.

The walk will set off promptly from the green gate. Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable footwear for walking.

With all the tropical weather we've had over the past week it is now time to get the Bananas and Cannas out of their winter storage.

The gardeners started planting up the top bed on the Terraces today after our volunteers cleared all the daffodils. These beds haven't been part of the bedding scheme for many years as they were planted up with Dog Roses.

We can't wait to see this area fully planted up with summer flowers again!
