Congratulations to Paola Davies on her election as Almondbury Ward councillor. We wish her every success.

Thank you to the 528 residents who placed their trust in our popular candidate, Robert McGuin - Almondbury Ward and to all the volunteers who supported him throughout the campaign.

The by-election may be over, but the issues we’ve been working on remain just as important. We will continue supporting our community and campaigning for Tolson Museum, Castle Hill and the local issues that matter to residents.

Thank you, Almondbury.

🌳 Robert McGuin will be our candidate in the Almondbury by-election on Thursday 13 August.

Born in Huddersfield. 36 years in the area. Family in Almondbury Ward.

Robert has spent years campaigning with his dad, former councillor Bernard McGuin, to save Tolson Museum. Over 2,100 residents have signed their petition.

The councillor Almondbury elected in May quit after less than two months, landing taxpayers with a £25,000 by-election bill.

Robert will fight to save Tolson Museum, tackle anti-social behaviour, fix our potholes and protect greenspaces in Almondbury, Lepton and Fenay Bridge.

This evening it was essential that a Leader was elected to lead the Council and end the stalemate that has existed since the Local Elections. We have tried hard to find a compromise between the two opposing groupings on the Council.

Neither could command support of a majority in the Chamber and neither represent the values and type of politics that Conservatives stand for.

The chamber has rarely been this divided and residents have expressed concerns about either party becoming the administration.

Our suggestion that the two largest parties collaborate and seek a way forward has fallen on deaf ears and it has become increasingly clear the Green led coalition was unwilling to try and seek an accommodation with the largest party.

Without meaningful dialogue between the two largest groups, no “shared administration” was possible.

The convention at Kirklees has always been to allow the largest party to form a minority administration in these circumstances, with every policy still scrutinised and voted on by all members on its merits.

We have chosen to follow that convention, this was a decision taken reluctantly but in the best interests of the residents of Kirklees.

This respects the election result. It restores democratic accountability. And it gives residents a council that can once again make decisions.

Let me be clear. This was not a Conservative endorsement of Reform UK. We will be a strong opposition, we have the most Councillors of any party that has more than two years experience and so are well placed to lead the challenge to the administration.

We will hold them to account on every issue that matters to residents.

But the responsibility now sits squarely with Cllr Sarah Wood.

She has spoken repeatedly about her readiness to lead. She has told this council she will bring people together and get the basics done.

Now she must prove it. Residents will judge her on results, and so will we.

Cllr John Taylor
Group Leader, Kirklees Council

Reform Kirklees aren't the only ones with selection problems.

Turns out Reform's own unelected "Shadow Home Secretary" can't get himself selected as a candidate either.

Watch him fail to deny it. 🤣
