Happy Birthday Royal Air Force Air Cadets
Today the Royal Air Force Air Cadets turns 80, an amazing milestone for the world’s premier aviation-focussed youth organization. With its origins in the Air Defence Cadet Corps which was established in 1938 as Britain began to prepare for war, the Air Training Corps was formally established by Royal Warrant on 5 February 1941. Within months the ATC had grown to more than 400 squadrons, with many Air Cadets taking their new aviation knowledge and skills into the Royal Air Force at a time of national crisis.
Roll forward to 5 February 2021 and the ATC now has over 900 Squadrons in every UK parliamentary constituency, and there is a well-established partnership with the 224 RAF sections of the Combined Cadet Force.
A diverse body of over 40,000 Air Cadets enjoy a range of exciting opportunities, including gliding with 2 Flying Training School, air experience flying with 6 Flying Training School, adventurous training and the The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. This brilliant offer is brought to life by a small team of dedicated permanent staff and nearly 15,000 amazing volunteers who bless us with their gift of time and talent.
Please take a moment to join me in marking the 80th anniversary of the Royal Air Force Air Cadets. Remember our rich history, be inspired the contribution of generations of staff and volunteers, and be proud of our Air Cadets and all that they achieve in reaching for the stars - they are without doubt the best of British youth, they are the future, they are the Next Generation.
