Huge congratulations to Joan, a resident who recently celebrated her 80th birthday by giving back to a cause close to her heart ❤️

Instead of asking for gifts, Joan invited family, friends and fellow residents to donate to Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity, raising an incredible £400 🎉

What a wonderful achievement and a truly inspiring way to celebrate turning 80 👏

🧠 This week is Dementia Action Week – a national campaign raising awareness of dementia, the importance of early diagnosis, and the steps we can all take to protect our brain health.

We’ve partnered with Derbyshire County Council, the Alzheimer’s Society, and other key partners, to launch the Derby and Derbyshire Brain Health Toolkit. The toolkit is a practical resource to help residents understand how everyday habits can support brain health.

Simple actions can make a difference:
✅ Stay physically active
✅ Keep socially connected
✅ Eat well
✅ Look after your hearing
✅ Stop smoking
✅ Manage blood pressure and long-term health conditions
✅ Keep your mind active

It’s never too early or too late to start looking after your brain health!

Heading into a sunny bank holiday weekend with friends? Make SPF one of your BFFs. 🫶🌞
UV can damage your skin and increase the risk of skin cancer, but it also helps your body produce vitamin D. So it’s all about enjoying the sunshine safely when UV levels are high.

🟠⚠ Amber heat-health alerts have been issued to the health systems across central England until Wednesday 27 May, with yellow alerts covering the rest of the country.
While hot weather may be welcome for some, it can still have a serious impact on people’s health and wellbeing. Early warnings help those in health and social care, as well as anyone supporting more vulnerable individuals, such as older adults and young children, to prepare and take appropriate action.

Enjoy the warm weather safely and look out for those who may struggle in the heat ☀️

An Amber Heat-Health alert has been issued for the county and will be in place from 2pm today (Friday 22 May) until 5pm on Wednesday 27 May.

We’re asking everyone to stay vigilant and take a few simple steps to keep themselves and others safe:
🔥 Reduce fire risks
Hot weather increases the risk of wildfires and BBQ-related incidents:
- Never leave BBQs unattended and keep them away from fences/trees
- Dispose of ci******es safely
- Avoid lighting fires in open spaces, including disposable BBQ’s

🌊 Stay safe around water
Water can still be dangerously cold despite the warm weather.
- If you get into trouble, remember 'Float to Live'.
- If you see someone in difficulty, never enter the water yourself. Call 999.

💧 Stay cool and hydrated
- Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day
- Stay in the shade between 11am–3pm
- Wear sunscreen, a hat and light clothing if you’re outdoors
- Keep your home cool by closing blinds/curtains and opening windows when it’s cooler outside

👨‍👩‍👧 Look after those most at risk
Older people, young children, pregnant women and those with health conditions may be more vulnerable check in on them and help them keep cool.

Let’s all work together to stay safe while making the most of the sunshine.
