Beautiful day for a park tidy-up following the council’s recent mowing activities. 🌳☀️

The park is looking very dry at the moment, but it’s still looking beautiful. A huge thank you to everyone who stopped to chat and thank us for our efforts — and an especially big thank you to the community members we met who were also litter picking while out enjoying their own walk. 💚

For anyone who isn’t aware: if you pick up litter in the park, firstly, thank you! Secondly, if you tie a knot in the top of your rubbish bag, you can leave it next to any green Parks bin and the council will collect it during their next round of collections.

A couple of important reminders:

⚠️ Please do not pick up sharps or anything else you don't feel comfortable handling. You can report these, and other issues in the park, to Derby City Council through https://www.derby.gov.uk/streetpride/

🔋 Batteries, including those in discarded vapes, must not go into the usual rubbish bins. If you find these, please leave them safely next to the other rubbish bins and they will be collected and disposed of appropriately.

🌿 Supporting a great community effort at St Peter's Church 🌿

Today, volunteers from Friends of Littleover Parks - FOLP and Greener Derby were pleased to join and support St Peter's Church Littleover's monthly churchyard clean-up team.

This is very much a St Peter's initiative, and we were delighted to lend a hand alongside their regular volunteers. It was a great example of different community groups working together to care for a space that is valued by so many local people.

The churchyard and the public footpaths that run through and around it are used every day by residents and visitors alike. Whether people are taking a few minutes in the shade, paying their respects to loved ones, or simply passing through, it is a special place that deserves to be cared for.

A huge thank you to everyone from St Peter's, Friends of Littleover Parks and Greener Derby who came out to help today. Together, volunteers spent between one and five hours helping to keep the churchyard looking its best.

And a special thank you to St Peter's Church for providing the much-appreciated refreshments afterwards! ☕🍰

Why not join us on Saturday between 10-12. Help us plant some saplings, learn about Friends of Littleover Parks or encourage your children to take part in activities about trees for the Urban Tree Festival with Greener Littleover

It was great to be able to highlight the important work that the amazing green spaces groups do across Derby each week in our Derby Telegraph article this week.

Our parks and green spaces are doing more than ever with limited resources, especially as councils face tough financial choices and competing pressures on essential services.

And yet, these places are vital: they give us space to breathe, move, play, connect, and recover from the stresses of everyday life. Parks also support health and wellbeing outcomes and provide safe, welcoming spaces for local communities.

Only a very small percentage of Derby City Council’s Council Tax-funded budget goes towards parks / open spaces — but the value they deliver to residents’ wellbeing is far bigger than the line in the budget.

🌳 This weekend is the start of the Urban Tree Festival (9–17 May 2026) — a timely reminder of the benefits and importance of trees in our urban spaces.

Trees make our neighbourhoods more liveable, support wildlife, and help our parks feel cooler, greener and more welcoming — and they’re worth celebrating and protecting.

It’s great to see King George V Park thriving today - with two great offerings available for users, whether you fancy a sit down/take away tea from the new cafe at King George V Community Centre or one of the amazing varieties from our long serving Mastroianni Ice’s.

Both serving the community. And proving that our parks have space for everyone. Whether you like a walk, a cup of tea, a bagel, an ice cream or frozen drink or just to sit and people watch.
