✨ Surfacing a Special Place for Play and Smiles

We're pleased to have recently completed a combination of artificial grass and wetpour safety surfacing at Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People in collaboration with David Greaves Landscape Design & Construction

Despite some challenging weather conditions, our installation team successfully delivered the surfacing package for a new outdoor play area that will provide a welcoming, engaging space for children and young people.

The project included:

🟩 200m² of artificial grass play surfacing

🏁 A fun race track feature with white dashed line markings

🟢 142m² of EN1177-certified wetpour safety surfacing

🎨 A range of colours and textures designed to support imaginative outdoor play

Projects like this highlight the important role high-quality surfacing plays in creating safe, welcoming spaces where children and young people can play, explore, and enjoy being outdoors.

🤝 Great projects are shaped through collaboration

At Abacus Playgrounds, working alongside partners across the industry is a key part of what we do. Bringing together different areas of expertise helps create spaces that work well for the communities using them.

On this project, we worked in partnership with HAGS UK on a scheme for St Albans City & District Council at Oysterfields Playing Fields.

From a surfacing perspective, the installation included:

✔ 81m² of 80mm depth wetpour
✔ 59m² of 50mm depth wetpour
✔ 170m² of 30–40mm depth wetpour
✔ 33m² of 50% light blue and black fleck river pathway ✔ 277m² of black wetpour

Installed onto an existing wetpour and stone base, with prefabricated graphics supplied by HAGS UK Play, helping to bring additional play value into the space through visual design.

Projects like this highlight how important the finer details are. Getting the right depths and finish in place plays a big role in how the surface performs over time.

⛳ Driving Range Surfacing Installation – Rivenhall Oaks Golf Centre

The Abacus Playgrounds team completed a specialist surfacing installation at Rivenhall Oaks Golf Centre and Events Venue in collaboration with Rose Builders Ltd.

This project involved the rip-out and replacement of the existing wetpour surface at an established driving range, helping to refresh the bays and walkways to create a durable and practical surface for golfers.

Project details:

🟢 235m² total surfacing area installed
🟢 Removal and responsible disposal of existing wetpour (approx. 30mm depth) to a licensed facility
🟢 Installation completed in one continuous visit to minimise disruption to the venue

Surfacing specification included:

• Dark grey full colour wetpour for the walkway areas
• 70/30 dark green and black rubber mix within the driving bays to create a greener appearance while maintaining durability

Golf facilities require surfaces that can cope with high footfall, changing weather conditions, and regular use, and wetpour provides a reliable and long-lasting solution.

🌈 New Wetpour Surface for Rainbow Smiles Nursery, West Dulwich

We recently completed a wetpour replacement for Rainbow Smiles Nursery in West Dulwich. Their outdoor play area is used every day, so the surface needed a fresh upgrade to keep the space inviting and ready for active play.

Our team removed the old surface and installed a new 16m² EN1177 certified wetpour system in Black, Red, Green and Blue graphics. The design includes number targets, road-style markings and colourful play zones that help support movement, early learning and imaginative play.

At Abacus Playgrounds, we work with architects, contractors, playground equipment companies and councils, as well as smaller nursery projects like this one. It’s always rewarding to see how even a small upgrade can have such a big impact on the children.

✨ Another Great Collaboration Complete! 🤝

Abacus Playgrounds is proud to have worked alongside Rose Builders Ltd on the new Channels Day Nursery in Chelmsford, part of the Seymour House Day Nursery Schools group.

Our team delivered safe and durable surfacing designed for early years play and development, combining bright visuals with long-lasting quality.

🏫 Surfacing Details:
✅ Terrace Area: 92m² of 40mm artificial play grass with a 25mm shockpad, plus 50.7m² of wet pour rubber surfacing in Playtop with Nike Grind Sand and RH31 Cream.
✅ Secure External Play Area: 215.53m² of the same artificial grass with a 25mm shockpad, and 122m² of EN1177 certified wet pour surfacing in RH30 Beige.

Both areas provide a safe and low-maintenance surface suitable for children’s exploration and active learning.

🍦 The Ice Cream Fields, The Ice Cream Farm (Cheshire) ✨

To celebrate 10 years since redevelopment, The Ice Cream Farm wanted a bright, inclusive play landscape that builds on the success of Daisy’s Garden.

We partnered with Play & Leisure Ltd to deliver the surfacing across the new Ice Cream Fields. Our team installed 1,700m² of TPV wet pour with ramped edging, set to the required fall heights for each activity zone. TPV wet pour is UV stable, long-lasting, and efficient to install, with a wide choice of colours that really make the themed play area stand out for play.

We used custom mixes of Strawberry, Vanilla, Chocolate, Berry, and Mint so the surface ties neatly into the play themes and equipment.
