Derby Churches Nightshelter

Derby Churches Nightshelter Derby Churches Nightshelter has been running since 2013. It aims to provide temporary accommodation for 35 street homeless guests.

Nightshelter emerged as a response to the 85% cut to the homeless financial provision in Derby City by the local authority. The financial cut was the largest of all local authorities in the UK and meant fewer beds available over the severe weather provision period of 1st Dec-31st Mar. The project provides a mobile temporary nightshelter for up to 35 people each night for street homeless people, wh

o can present with various issues that have led to their homelessness. These include:
• addiction;
• relationship breakdown;
• loss of job or benefits;
• asylum seeking;
• recently released prisoners;
• mental health and/or learning difficulties. A hot meal is provided, a camp bed, sleeping bag and blankets, and breakfast in the morning. The shelter runs for 4 months and changes venue each night so it is temporary in nature. The Nightshelter rotates around 7 of the City Centre churches for one night of the week throughout the 4-month period using the same venue each night of the week. near the city centre, will each open one
night per week in rotation through
1st December 2016 – 31st March 2017. Volunteers will give a warm welcome and a
substantial meal to up to 35 guests. At 10pm, paid overnight staff will take over
as the guests go to sleep in sleeping bags
on mattresses on the church floor. Next
morning there’ll be a breakfast as guests
leave by 8am.
