What a classic picture of these hard working ladies!

* Here we have an image from about 1930s of the Star factory and its large staff. At this time there were 44 Derry shirt factories, with 8000 staff and more outworkers. It is a reminder of the massive role of the shirt industry in the city, now gone, with all the jobs it provided.

The Star factory was built in 1899 and, unlike other Derry factories, it used Donegal sandstone which gives it a unique appearance. Thankfully the building now has a new use. Thanks to Joseph Keys for sharing this image.

Today is the day to celebrate one of the most important machines in the building, Sewing Machine Day. "I never learned how to use a sewing machine until I was 30 years old. I thought I’d never even be able to thread a needle, now I’m gearing up to run upcycling workshops in the hub.
