City Centre Initiative (CCI) was established in April 2000 as a partnership between the private and public sectors. The Company’s key objective is to maintain the city as clean, safe and friendly and works with partners and stakeholders, such as Derry City Council, Department for Social Development, PSNI and the private sector to do this. CCI believe in a partnership approach for the effective man

agement of its core area. CCI is the dedicated town centre management organisation for the City of Derry-Londonderry and was established to develop, manage and initiate a number of projects designed to promote the commercial vitality and viability of the city centre. CCI’s Board is currently made up of representatives from the public and private sector. Core funders for CCI are Derry City Council, (DCC), Department for Social Development, (DSD), and the Police Service Northern Ireland, (PSNI). Our City has a rich cultural heritage and with a strong vision for the future Derry-Londonderry must ensure that our city centre is well-placed to meet the demands of its residents, business community and visitors and can respond to the challenges of being Northern Ireland’s ‘second city’. A strong city centre management organisation that can engage all members of the city centre community presents therefore real opportunities for Derry-Londonderry.

In January 2026 our wardens reached out to Northern Ireland Water asking for assistance removing graffiti from their pumping station in the Victoria Market area. It was quite an eyesore. We are very grateful for their response.

The Pumping Station has been fully cleared and a graffiti protection coating applied. This will ensure it stays clean and clear in the months and years ahead.

Thank you from all the team, at City Centre Initiative

UPDATE: REUNITED 😊

Happy Saturday Everyone!

Our wardens on duty this morning have found this lovely crocheted blanket on the Derry Walls. We know just how much of a treasured possession this is to a little Derry Walls adventurer somewhere.

We would love to reunite it with them...

If you hear of any "wee critter" missing their blankie, share the message ❤️

The Derry Walls are blooming!...and we have been making the most of the dry spell to remove annual weeds and invasive species from the carriageway and curtain walls. This work will continue throughout the growing season. Some of the vegetation removed this week include hundreds of Red Shank, Dandelion, Grass, Nettle plants and of course, the famous mortar busting Buddleia.

On our rounds we also noted some beautiful plants which are non-invasive and add so much to the character of the walls. These will be left to flourish for the insects, the bees, the birds and visitors alike to enjoy.

These plants include 'Ivy-leaved Toadflax' with its cascading pink flowers and bright red stems. This plant is native to Southern Europe and is common on ancient walls.

Another is 'Walls Rue', a species of fern which loves making its home in the lime mortar used by the heritage stone masons to point and carry out repairs on the Derry Walls.

We also have 'Pelitory of the Wall' which is native to the Eastern Mediterranian and the Middle East. This plant is a welcome food source for caterpillars, butterflies and other insects. It is sometimes known as Asthma W**d due to the potency of its sticky pollen.

Last but not least we have another little ancient, wall dwelling fern called Maidenhead Spleenwort. This plant is very hardy despite its fragile appearance and is known for colonising old walls and ancient monuments worldwide.

Over the coming months we will be continuing our work to ensure the Derry Walls are looking presentable and protected for future generations. Stay tuned for more updates on our work throughout the year.

☎️ It's our Niall's big day😅👏☎️📞

12 solid years of campaigning for their removal and his constant emails, photographs, removing stickers, posters, cleaning, dealing with anti social behaviour and reporting damage to them and they're off!

Whilst there still will be a provision of public telephones, the vast majority have been unused due to advances in modern technology and have thankfully been removed today.

Niall is continuing work with BT on the removal of the telephone kiosks and the provision of more modern alternatives to the unsightly and outdated telephone boxes. Well done Niall (we have never seen him happier, thank you BT 🤣😍).
