Our Neighbourhood policing team in Swindon Police on why diversity matters...

Neighbourhood Policing Week

This post goes a little beyond Neighbourhood Policing but is still very relevant to the role your Neighbourhood Teams do.

Having good key community contacts assist in understanding the cultures, customs and concerns of the communities we serve in Swindon and your Neighbourhood Teams work hard at forming positive relationships. However, having a representative workforce is even more of a benefit in policing and we are fortunate enough to have officers and staff from different backgrounds, upbringings, ethnicity, religions, sexual orientations and disabilities who enable us to reach out and police in a different way.

The photo attached to this post shows a small selection of officers who work in Swindon who speak at least one other language in addition to English. In this group alone there are in excess of 10 different languages spoken. We have closer to 20 languages in total spoken by our Swindon Neighbourhoods and response staff. The benefits our colleagues bring are immense - enriching our understanding and facilitating our communication with the communities we have within the Borough area.

At Wiltshire Police, we believe our strength lies in our differences.

Every individual brings a unique mix of background, perspective and experience — and that’s exactly what helps us connect with our communities and keeps them safe.

We’re proud to promote a workplace where diversity is not just welcomed, but valued. By working together, we build trust, drive innovation and make a real difference every day.

Congratulations to our 12 new recruits from this Police Now cohort!

148 new trainee detectives were attested today (17th March) at Police Now’s national training academy. The new recruits will join specialist teams across policing as Police Now’s National Detective Programme continues to expand, pilot new initiatives, and drive diversity across policing.

The diverse cohort of new officers will either investigate complex cases within Criminal Investigation Departments, tackle fraud on a national scale as part of a new pilot initiative, or specialise in Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) to protect the UK from serious harm and threat.

Every police officer and every special constable is required, on appointment, to be attested. This is done at a formal ceremony in which police officers are required to take an oath and they are formally appointed into the post.

Congratulations to our new detectives 🎉

On Saturday we attended Councillors Adorabelle Ameral Shaikh and Domingos Seby Dia resident surgery at Broadgreen Community Centre.
It was wonderful to be invited along with our operational colleagues from Swindon Central South Police .

It was great to meet local people, discuss our current vacancies and talk about the importance of diversity in our force.

We even had a spot of sunshine :)
