Do you know how the plant Devils Bit Scabious got its name? Legend has it that the Devil was so furious that plant could heal people that he bit off its root and to this day its root looks flat and cut off. Its traditional use was for treatment of skin conditions such as boils, scabies and sores. Want to learn more about plants and how their history’s are tied up in Scottish folklore, then join Cairngorms National Park Ranger on our Folklore of Plants - Guided Walk

Have you ever stopped to think where some of our local place-names come from? The Gaelic language has a long and rich history across Scotland – including here – and we are delighted to be welcoming Aberdeen Gaelic Club: City & Shire to the Reserve for a day of discovering about plants, birds and place-names whilst providing an opportunity for local Gaelic-speakers to meet and learn through a workshop and nature walk lead by Gaelic broadcaster and environmental educator, Roddy Maclean (Ruairidh MacIlleathain). There are still tickets available to join the afternoon nature walk, so if you are a Gaelic-speaker or advanced learner then do join us at Muir of Dinnet on Saturday 12 September.

There is definitely a feeling of seasonal shift starting around the Reserve now…..anyone else noticing that those autumnal colours are beginning to appear, fungi are starting to pop up, that many of our birds are preparing or have already left on their epic migrations, Rowans are heaving with berries and there’s a subtle change in the evening light as nights draw in, but deeper than that you have that innate sense within that we’re moving from late summer to early autumn 🍂

As you walk around certain areas of the Reserve just now you are greeted with quite literally clouds of these beautiful Scotch Argos butterflies. You will readily find males weaving through grasses whilst the females are perched basking in the sunshine, these bonny butterflies are relatively widespread in Scotland but their range has drastically reduced across England being only found in 2 isolated locations.
