What a wonderful story
Chloe was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia in July 2018.
“I had my little girl in October 2017 and the blood tests during pregnancy were fine. I felt extremely tired for quite a few months. This is of course normal for a new mum, but I found that the tiredness was getting worse as time went on. I also started to have daily headaches. I had my eyes checked and my vision was fine, so I thought it best to visit the GP.
“My GP said it was likely to be tension headaches, but he did a blood test to check all my levels were ok anyway. I got a call from the GP the day after I had my blood test done, asking me to come in. They told me my white blood count was 44,000 (the average is between 4000 – 10,000). A day later I was at the hospital seeing the haematologist.
“They took more bloods to double check and they came back with the same result. I was then asked to do a bone marrow biopsy which was just awful! This confirmed that I had Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia.
“I started my chemotherapy drugs a week later. I had to fast for two hours before and one hour after except for water. I got used to this and it was a small sacrifice in the big scheme of things.
“I had some awful side effects, initially pain in my spleen, flu-like aches, severe fatigue, but luckily they subsided. My results showed that the amount of abnormal white blood cells went from 98% to 2.3% which was incredible.
“I was not allowed to conceive on that treatment and I am meant to be on it for life, or until more trials are done on taking patients off the medication. This was a big thing for me, as I have always wanted a large family. My consultant said that once I reach remission and I have been in remission for two years, they may be willing to stop the medication so that I can get pregnant. I would then start the pills again after the birth.”
Today, Chloe is four years in remission and has a second child, a son!
