It’s Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month.

The most common symptom of womb cancer is unusual vaginal bleeding. Less common symptoms are pain or discomfort in the pelvic area or pain during s*x.

If you have any of these symptoms, it’s important that you contact your GP.

What a wonderful story

What a wonderful story

Chloe was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia in July 2018.

“I had my little girl in October 2017 and the blood tests during pregnancy were fine. I felt extremely tired for quite a few months. This is of course normal for a new mum, but I found that the tiredness was getting worse as time went on. I also started to have daily headaches. I had my eyes checked and my vision was fine, so I thought it best to visit the GP.

“My GP said it was likely to be tension headaches, but he did a blood test to check all my levels were ok anyway. I got a call from the GP the day after I had my blood test done, asking me to come in. They told me my white blood count was 44,000 (the average is between 4000 – 10,000). A day later I was at the hospital seeing the haematologist.

“They took more bloods to double check and they came back with the same result. I was then asked to do a bone marrow biopsy which was just awful! This confirmed that I had Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia.

“I started my chemotherapy drugs a week later. I had to fast for two hours before and one hour after except for water. I got used to this and it was a small sacrifice in the big scheme of things.

“I had some awful side effects, initially pain in my spleen, flu-like aches, severe fatigue, but luckily they subsided. My results showed that the amount of abnormal white blood cells went from 98% to 2.3% which was incredible.

“I was not allowed to conceive on that treatment and I am meant to be on it for life, or until more trials are done on taking patients off the medication. This was a big thing for me, as I have always wanted a large family. My consultant said that once I reach remission and I have been in remission for two years, they may be willing to stop the medication so that I can get pregnant. I would then start the pills again after the birth.”

Today, Chloe is four years in remission and has a second child, a son!

Chloe has hosted many Coffee Mornings over the years and last year she hosted a huge event with her friend Melissa. We're so grateful for all of Chloe’s support with Coffee Morning over the years!

You can host your Coffee Morning any way and anywhere you want. Sign up to host a Macmillan Coffee Morning on the 27th of September (or a day that suits you), so we can continue helping people with cancer live life as fully as they can: https://www.macmillan.org.uk/coffee-morning
