Doncaster Council is preparing a new Local Plan and wants to hear your views. The Local Plan Scoping Consultation is your opportunity to help shape future planning policies, development, housing, the economy, climate action and the environment across the borough.

The consultation is open until 5pm on Monday 21 September 2026. Whether you're a resident, business, landowner or community organisation, your feedback can help inform the next stage of the Local Plan.

Doncaster residents – including business owners, landowners and developers – are being asked to provide their views, thoughts and ideas on future development in Doncaster to help with the creation of the new local plan.

The Local Plan is a key document which sets out how and where Doncaster will grow and develop over the forthcoming years, and most importantly, is informed from consultation with local people to highlight areas of local importance. A new plan allows the Doncaster community and other key stakeholders, the opportunity to have their say at the very start of the plan-making process in Doncaster, to ensure appropriate levels of sustainable growth across the city.

As part of the process of creating a new Local Plan, the council will run a series of consultations to gather feedback along the way, with this scoping consultation an opportunity to provide initial thoughts, ideas and concerns along themes such as housing, climate and the local economy.

Fantastic achievement!

We are delighted to announce that our planning team won the Digital Transformation prize at this year’s Municipal Journal Awards, in recognition of how they have modernised their service.

Extending beyond just a single project, the team have made multiple innovations and introduced new automated tools to overhaul the planning system here in Doncaster. This has helped to make the service more responsive, more efficient and more accessible for our residents, businesses and developers.

Can you help us identify land and brownfield sites for future development?

Doncaster residents, businesses and developers are being asked to submit site and land suggestions, in particular examples of derelict or underutilised “brownfield” land within the city, which could be used for future development projects.

Known as a 'Call for Sites', the suggestions submitted will be considered for future development as part of the new local plan. Doncaster Cabinet approved the start of a new local plan for the city at a cabinet meeting on 20 May.

The new Local Plan will guide how Doncaster will grow into the 2040s and help identify and allocate land for future development to meet the housing, economic and infrastructure growth Doncaster is required to plan for.

Land suggestions can be submitted by anyone - even if you aren’t the landowner – with all suggestions considered as part of the process of shortlisting sites for the eventual final plan, which is expected to be presented to Full Council in Spring 2029 at the earliest.

🛠️ Minerals or waste uses
🌳 Infrastructure and green spaces
Submitting a site is not a planning application, and it doesn’t guarantee planning permission — it simply helps us understand what land might be available.

☘🌿 The River Don, Landscape and History – a Sense of Place Through Time Talk by Professor Ian D. Rotherham 🌿☘

This richly illustrated talk will take us down the arterial river of South Yorkshire from its upland western origins to the lowlands of the once-great South Yorkshire Fen. This watercourse put the ‘Don’ in Doncaster and has been central to the region’s people, communities, ecology, and history.

This talk will look at heritage from the past and short extracts of the ongoing ‘visualisation’ model (produced by the Landscape Heritage Research Foundation and South Yorkshire Biodiversity Research Group for the DCRT) and which brings the landscape changes to life today.
